Why Doesn’t Jesus Remove Our Burdens? | Matthew 11:16-19,25-30 with Lars Olson

Listen Later

In this episode, we ask Lars Olson, “If Jesus gives rest to the weary, why does he invite us to take his yoke instead of removing our burdens altogether?” We learn what makes Jesus' yoke easy and his burden light. All things have been handed over to Jesus by the Father. And what does he do with all that power? He reveals the Father to you. There's nothing left for you to accomplish—only Christ's Word to hear. Like oxen, we keep looking for another burden to pull, only to discover that the hardest burden of all is believing the work has already been done for us in Christ.

GOSPEL

Matthew 11:16-19,25-30

16 “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, 17  ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; 19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

25 At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

CARE OF SOULS: DEATH

In Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those facing death, grief, and loss.

Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders.

Across five episodes, the hosts tackle tough but essential questions on death:

  • How does Lutheran theology speak uniquely to death and grief?
  • What does faithful pastoral care look like when walking alongside those who mourn?
  • How can pastors offer both honesty and hope in the face of tragedy and loss?
  • What does ministry look like when death impacts the pastor as well as the congregation?
  • Why do funerals matter, and what is God giving through them?

With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the sorrow of death not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ.

Because in the end, it's not about avoiding death—it's about hearing the Gospel from the One who has passed through death and opened the way to life.
