Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives.
For our season opener, we spent time with Chris Baio exploring what it means to release his new solo album during a year of tumultuous events. Baio is used to being on tour non stop with Vampire Weekend and was looking forward to making good on his New Years resolution to produce other artists in his new studio but instead found himself accidentally exploring life as a kayaking bearded outdoorsman in Oregon. We all got a little weird in 2020 but we are glad that it resulted in some new songs and only a few questionable hair choices.

In our last episode of 2020, we spent some virtual time in Vancouver with Tegan and Sara, who managed to accidentally get stuck in the same city just in time to work on a million lockdown projects together. Between writing a graphic novel and crafting a new album just after the release of their memoir, they also managed to raise $100k through their non profit foundation in order to help the vulnerable communities that have been most affected by COVID. In a time of chaos, it’s comforting to know that Tegan and Sara have been busy cooking up new projects, even while they are obsessively watching TikTok just like the rest of us.

We caught up with Tawny Newsome and Bethany Thomas to chat about their brilliant album Material Flats and how life was treating these two talented multi-hyphenates. While they were lucky and got to record the album together earlier this year, these two have spent the better part of 2020 having virtual television show premieres, navigating online theater, and learning when to take a moment to pause. From learning to engineer their own record to putting out podcasts, we are glad that they are taking a cue from the indoor kids on how to create during these strange times.

We caught up with Harvey Guillén, aka everyone’s favorite familiar Guillermo from the brilliant series What We Do In The Shadows. Between safely filming on set in Canada and delving into the world of voice acting, Harvey has been staying busy, keeping himself (and the rest of us) entertained as the time soup of 2020 drags on. From the importance of representation in the media to the joys of binge watching, Harvey’s take on this year is both hilarious and insightful, which is our personal favorite combination.

Before the world shut down, Ólafur Arnalds started crafting his brilliant new album Some Kind Of Peace. Little did he know that it would be anthemic for a time when we are all tuning into our inner world for better or worse. We loved getting to hear about how he’s been rediscovering his own inner and outer landscapes writing in Reykjavik and learning from his example that to really create our best work, we sometimes have to get a little bit obsessed.

This week, we got to ride a rollercoaster of emotions with Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. From learning that his music has inspired both romances and break ups to navigating life in an ever transforming band, Greg spent the last few decades collaborating with everyone from his bandmates to musicians around the world to Justin Theroux on his journey to create inspiringly delightful soundscapes. As we approach a critical election in the United States, Greg urges us all to lean into the power of transformation and social engagement as we are all navigating the wondrously strange world of 2020.

What happens when your plans to tour get canceled and you end up in Stockholm? If you happen to be Icona Pop aka Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, you decide to make the best of things and throw a virtual rave spa for all your friends and fans. Caroline and Aino opened up about what it’s like to be creating a new album while staying put, as their songs are so often informed by their international travels, and the joys of relearning the pleasures of domesticity (spoiler: it involves teaching yourself how to cook all over again). We love their attitude of taking this time to become more forgiving of yourself and tuning into your own sense of purpose and community.

We’ve all been having a bit of an out of body experience during quarantine but at least we got to chat with Perfume Genius aka Mike Hadreas about how dancing helped him connect with his body in a novel way before we all got stuck inside. As a writer and singer, he has explored some gorgeous emotional landscapes, but in dance, he found a way to express those feelings that just can’t be translated into words. Whether it’s performing on livestream to an empty theater, or channeling his inner chihuahua energy, Hadreas never fails to enthrall us.

We had the pleasure of chatting with William Cashion of Future Islands all about his new solo ambient project Postcard Music and the ways that transcendental meditation have informed his work. From collaborations with his bandmates to paintings with his wife, William creates with a calm sense of curiosity that comes from quiet introspection. We are excited to get a chance to hear his latest work with Future Islands, which was all mixed remotely during quarantine, and see where his creative journeys take him next.

While the world hit pause, Aluna has been busy Zooming up a storm to make the dance music world a more inclusive space for artists and audiences alike. We got to chat about the nature of ongoing social change and how she manages her activism with her creative musical life. Aluna reminded us that it’s vital to create a space where others can share their voice and to stay curious about their experiences in order to gain empathy and create better art. She asks that you check out Black Women’s Blueprint while listening to her interview.
