What if understanding yourself isn’t the same as becoming free?
In this episode, I explore what therapy can sometimes miss about developmental and relationship trauma: the protective and survival strategies that can remain in place even when we understand our patterns, manage our anxiety and become better at regulating our emotions.
We look at attachment, childhood trauma, people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional distance and the nervous system — and at an important question: Is therapy only helping us feel better, or is it giving us more freedom and choice in how we relate to ourselves and others?
Childhood trauma doesn't always look like trauma. It can appear as anxiety, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, or the persistent feeling that something is wrong with you — even when you understand yourself remarkably well.
In this first episode of Why We Struggle, trauma therapist Valentina Levant explores developmental and attachment trauma, the role of the nervous system, and why insight alone doesn't always create change. What we struggle with today may once have been an intelligent way of adapting to what we couldn't change.
