On Saturday, May 31st, 2014, Greg Steinburg was bicycling along Big Bend Road near his home in Waukesha, Wisconsin, when he stumbled upon a girl lying in the grass toward the end of the dead-end road. As he got closer, he saw that the girl was alive, but covered in blood. Steinburg dropped his bike in the road, and rushed to help the girl. With shaking hands, he took his phone from his pocket and dialed 911.
Officer Dan Klein arrived at the scene just a couple of minutes later. He called out to the girl as he approached, introducing himself and asking if she was okay. As he got closer, the blood stains on her clothes seemed to grow. Officer Klein soon learned that the girl’s name was Payton Leutner and when he asked her who had hurt her, she told him that her best friend, 12-year-old Morgan Geyer, had stabbed her with a knife.

In this episode, we hope to shed light on some missing unsolved murder cases from Oregon. We begin with the 1992 murders of Sharri Presswood and two of her children - 4-year-old Heather Wixon and 2-year-old Jeffery Wixon. We then discuss three seemingly random murders - the 2011 murder of David Grubbs in Ashland, Oregon, the 2016 murder of Luccas McNeill in Portland, Oregon and the 2021 murder of Travis Juetten in Silverton, Oregon. We wrap up by discussing the possibility of a serial killer operating in and around Portland, Oregon during the winter and spring of 2023.

The Bermuda Triangle is the infamous expanse of ocean located between Miami, Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. Records of difficulties in the region stretch as far back as Christopher Columbus’s fateful voyage to North America in 1492, but in the last century, the Bermuda Triangle has been the site of at least 50 ship disappearances, 20 plane disappearances, countless plane and ship wrecks and over 1,000 fatalities. We don’t have time to discuss all of those mysterious disappearances in depth, but in this episode we’re going to discuss some of the more infamous disappearances that happened in the Bermuda Triangle and even suggest some theories as to why these disappearances and wrecks may have happened.

Late on the evening of December 1st, 1996, on a quiet country road just outside of Alvechurch in Birmingham a man was getting ready to go to sleep when he heard loud screaming coming from the direction of the road. Tall hedges blocked his view but as he approached his front gate, he heard a woman crying for help and when he looked down the road, he was shocked to see a woman, bruised, and covered in blood, holding the body of a young man.

The man encouraged the hysterical woman to come inside and wait for the police. As soon as she entered the house, the resident called the police. When investigators arrived, they learned that the woman was 27-year-old Tracie Andrews and the dead man in the road was her 25-year-old fiancé, Lee Harvey.

The Cecil Hotel has been sitting in the heart of Los Angeles, California since 1924. Located at 640 S. Main Street, the Cecil Hotel started as a luxury destination for wealthy businessmen, but the hotel was hit hard during the Great Depression and never truly recovered. Throughout its 99 year history, the Cecil has seen over 16 deaths due to murder or suicide. It also served as a temporary home for two notorious serial killers (Richard Ramirez AKA The Night Stalker and Jack Unterweger AKA The Vienna Strangler), and the last known sighting of Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was at the hotel’s bar, but those old stories had faded into obscurity for many people until 2013, when 21-year-old Elisa Lam went missing while staying at the Cecil Hotel.

It's a story many people know - In the dead of night, a teenage girl finds herself alone in a house, the children she's caring for sound asleep upstairs. She's settled in, watching television, when a phone call breaks the silence. A voice on the other end, cold and sinister, whispers, “Check the children.'" At first, she dismisses it as a prank, but the calls persist, each one more unnerving than the last. Fear begins to claw at her, gripping her heart with icy fingers. Desperate and terrified, she dials 911, and the police promise to trace the next call. When it comes, they call her back, urging her to get the kids and leave the house immediately. She runs from the home and when the police arrive they tell her that the calls were coming from inside the house and a deranged killer has murdered the children.

There are many different variations of this urban legend. In some versions everyone survives, in other versions no one survives, but the basic premise is always the same.

Although there are no known cases that specifically match the scenario from that urban legend, there is one particular murder that is thought to be the inspiration for the chilling tale, but you might want to curb your expectations because I can tell you that this episode is going to take us into a true horror story where we discuss two haunting, unsolved murders and the disturbing reality of racial injustice in the southern United States in the 1940s.
