  • Back to the Future (1985)
What better way to kick off a summer of movies than formally introducing Courtney to one of the most iconic and timeless blockbusters of the 1980s: Back to the Future!
We praise the brilliant pairing of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd and the charming, airtight, Oscar-nominated screenplay; we revisit one of the most infamous cases of Hollywood recasting; and we take an entire sidebar on time travel in fiction and some unexplored consequences of Doc and Marty’s time travel shenanigans.

  • La La Land (2016)
It’s a palette cleanser before we move full steam into summer blockbuster season! We revisit the bright, colorful love letter to old Hollywood and millennial ennui — 2016’s La La Land!
We praise and defend the film’s ending against all the haters out there; we question Ryan Gosling’s fashion choices while never questioning his abilities as a performer or keeper of our hearts; we speculate aloud the logistics of moving to LA; and we analyze a key aspect to the film’s legacy: the worst on-air flub in Oscar’s history.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
We conclude our journey to Middle Earth with Peter’s Jackson grandiose trilogy capper. It won all of the awards and emotionally shook us for four hours. It’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King!
We interrogate the familiar criticism of King’s “too many endings” — we all have some thoughts about the spider — we are real Simps For Samwise — and we applaud one the greatest film achievements in our lifetime: an ambitious finale that not only sticks the landing, but gracefully brings a beloved story and cherished characters to a satisfying, tear-jerking conclusion.
This whole thing is mostly just an excuse to listen to a bunch of great Lord of the Rings quotes.

We continue our trek (with special guest Ryan Chollet) through Middle Earth with the ambitious second installment in Peter Jackson’s revered trilogy - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers!
We break down the successes and failures of structuring a middle act that must juggle multiple storylines and expand in scope; we let you know which characters are rich and complex, and which just really need to cool it; and we marvel at the film’s two key standouts: the desperate, gripping, and emotional defense of Helm’s Deep, and the brilliant performance and astonishing technological achievement of Andy Serkis’s Gollum.

  • The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
We’re wrapping up Courtney’s Batman journey as we head into the new year, with Christopher Nolan’s trilogy capper - 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises!
Special guest Ryan Chollet joins us to unpack Nolan’s big ideas and themes that—sometimes sloppily—guide the arc of the film; we have summertime excitement about theaters; we are biased as to why TV is better than reading books; and we air out our mixed feelings towards this Bat-finale that manages to at least be a fitting coda to a massively influential and genre-defining series from a director with an unmistakable vision and voice.

  • The Dark Knight (2008)
Special guest Ryan Chollet joins us as we continue Courtney’s deep dive into the Nolan Batman trilogy with one of the most iconic and influential films of the last 30 years - 2008’s exceptional The Dark Knight!
We marvel at the mesmerizing, timeless, and Oscar-winning portrayal of Heath Ledger’s Joker, we take detours about Patton Oswalt, Michael Keaton’s Batman, and discover some real animosity towards Pixar’s WALL-E - and then we mostly fawn over this gripping crime thriller dressed up as a Batman movie, whose cultural impact is still playing out over a decade later. (Also, it should’ve been nominated for — and then won — Best Picture.)

  • The Ring (2002)
Spooky season draws to a close as we revisit one of the most successful and lasting horror films of our adolescence — only '90s kids will remember Gore Verbinski's The Ring!
Special guests Ryan Chollet and Emma Watkins join us to reminisce about the movies that terrified us growing up, we remember Axe Body Spray, Courtney takes more swipes at Jennifer Connelly, and we debate if The Ring truly deserved it's place in our young minds as the scariest movie ever - or if it's 'merely' a well-acted, well-executed, creepy character drama that holds up two decades later.
