  • War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
The quarantine continues as we reach the satisfying and emotional conclusion to our rebooted ape trilogy - War for the Planet of the Apes!
Courtney reevaluates the science fiction genre in general, we marvel at some of the best visual effects committed to film, and admire how evoking war and biblical epics complement the storytelling and scale of yet another nuanced and compelling Ape entry.

  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
The quarantine never ends, and neither will this franchise, as we watch the genuinely great and suspenseful reboot sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes!
Courtney has nightmares about monkeys, we marvel at the impressive visual effects and tense sequences, and praise a beautifully-shot sequel that smartly expands on the complexities and emotional stakes of the strained—and possibly doomed—alliance between humans and CG apes. (Really though.)

  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
We're continuing our quarantine viewing with a set of films focused entirely around a global pandemic -- the surprisingly-good franchise reboot: Rise of the Planet of the Apes!
We recap the bizarre history of the Planet of the Apes series, an iconic franchise that refuses to die, with installments ranging from "Pretty Good!" to "Human Beings Approved This?" -- and we discuss this movie's grand achievement of emotionally investing both of us in the revolution of a CGI ape.

  • Contagion (2011)
We kicked off our quarantine with what is now apparently essential viewing — Steven Soderbergh’s outbreak thriller, Contagion!
We compare the eerie similarities between the crisis at the center of this film and at our own lives, and how Soderbergh was able to craft a smart, realistic thriller, with morally-complex characters reacting to an eerily prescient global disaster.

  • Pulp Fiction (1994)
We’re all social distancing and only have time to watch movies now — so here’s Courtney’s first viewing of the 1994 game-changer, Pulp Fiction!
We review the quirks and criticisms of Quentin Tarantino and his works, I discover Courtney paid to attend a Pitbull concert, and we discuss how Tarantino avoided the sophomore slump with an iconic and culturally-beloved film that dramatically changed the landscape of independent cinema.

  • (500) Days of Summer (2009)
To bid farewell to Valentine's Month, we watched the 2009 coming-of-age indie hit, (500) Days of Summer!
We rank our top 5 favorite Rom-Coms, reminisce about 2009 trends and blogs, and therapeutically process how this hugely relatable and influential film set the tone and expectation of our own dating experiences (and probably most Millennials who practiced dating in the last decade).

  • An Affair to Remember (1957) & Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, join us for our first Double Feature, pairing two of the most influential romantic comedies ever made, An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle!
We debate the ‘90s heartthrob status of Tom Hanks vs. Bill Pullman, Jashon pitches an alternate ending to An Affair, we interrogate Jashon’s anxiety of ruining nice things, and ruminate on the stereotype of Chick Flicks and how everyone should be more open to all film genres.

  • Titanic (1997)
We’ve finished Star Wars and decided to focus on another iconic blockbuster set largely on a ship — James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic, Titanic!
Courtney details her intense love for this film and Celine Dion, we are both baffled by the INSANE unused alternate ending, and we detail our personal connections as children of the ‘90s to the cultural obsession that was TITANIC.

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
We did it! Courtney has watched all of Star Wars. To celebrate the end of her journey to a galaxy far, far away, we have invited two special guests, Ryan Chollet and Paul Turner, to join us in a SPOILER-HEAVY review of the final film of the saga.
We debate the execution of The Rise of Skywalker's storytelling choices and revelations (some of us loved the movie; some really didn't), celebrate our collective love of breakout star Babu Frik, and give our final thoughts on the most influential film and pop culture phenomenon.

  • Little Women (1994 & 2019)
Join us for a palette cleanser from Star Wars madness as we watch the 1994 Oscar-nominated Little Women — and then also review the 2019 hopefully-Oscar-nominated adaptation from Greta Gerwig. We compare the two adaptations, discuss how inspired storytelling and characters can be relevantly updated, and complain about life before modern entertainment.
