The Greek Current

Will Greece extend its territorial waters amid Turkish threats?

Listen Later

In 2020, when tension with Turkey had reached a peak, Greece declared the extension of its territorial waters in the Ionian Sea from 6 to 12 nautical miles as it’s entitled to under international law. Now, it's being reported that Greece could make a similar move around the island of Crete. Turkey, which has a longstanding threat of war against Greece if it exercises its rights and extends its territorial waters in the Aegean, has warned Athens of “serious consequences” if it takes this step. John Psaropoulos, an independent journalist based in Athens and Al-Jazeera’s southeast Europe correspondent, joins Thanos Davelis to look at why Greece is now considering this step and break down what such a move would mean for the region. We also explore the role of the US in the Aegean as Turkey ramps up tensions.
