William Carey: Moving Forward While Sitting Still

Listen Later

William Carey's extraordinary journey from humble shoe cobbler to "Father of Modern Missions" reveals what happens when ordinary faith meets extraordinary commitment. Nicknamed "Columbus" for his childhood love of exploration, severe allergies forced young Carey to abandon dreams of outdoor adventure and settle for mending shoes in a small English village.

But his explorer's heart persisted. While working at his cobbler's bench, Carey created makeshift maps with cobbler's wax, taught himself Hebrew and Greek, and prayed for unreached people around the world. When criticized for neglecting his business to preach on weekends, he responded with words that should challenge us all: "My business is the gospel. I mend shoes to pay expenses."

In 1793, Carey proposed something revolutionary—becoming England's first Protestant missionary to India. Church leaders ridiculed him, but four businessmen promised to "hold the rope" while he descended into "the gold mine" of missionary service. For forty years, they kept that promise, supporting Carey as he transformed a nation through establishing schools, fighting injustice, creating dictionaries, and translating the Bible into 36 languages.

Yet Carey's life was marked by profound suffering. His first wife lost her mental health in India. A young son died. Then, after 19 years of labor, a catastrophic fire destroyed his printing press, consuming his translations, dictionaries, and years of irreplaceable work. Standing amid the ashes, he preached from Psalm 46:10—"Be still and know that I am God"—with the simple message that God has a right to do with us as He pleases, and our duty is to surrender to His will.

Rather than quitting, this devastation became a turning point. Support poured in from England, and Carey served 21 more years. His perspective on obstacles became his legacy: "There are grave difficulties on every hand, and more are looming ahead. Therefore, we must go forward."

What challenges are you facing today? Carey's life teaches us the paradoxical strength found in being still before God while simultaneously moving forward in faith. Subscribe to hear more stories of extraordinary faith that will challenge and inspire your own journey with Christ.
