In a few aspects, "Oddity" is a unique supernatural horror film. One of those ways is that, unlike other movies, it treats its audience with greater respect by not spoon-feeding them obvious visual signals or onscreen text that indicates time is passing. Because of this, the first sequence of events can have a perplexing chronology, thus it might take some getting used to the somewhat nonlinear narrative of the picture. A loud, keening blast from the shofar heralds the beginning of "Between the Temples." If you haven't heard it before, try to picture the sound of someone leaning forward in the driver's seat with their face plastered against the steering wheel. The most nervous comedy of the year begins on an incredibly foreboding tone, telling the story of a cantor going through a spiritual crisis after losing his voice, his wife, and his will to live. Jason Schwartzman plays antiquated, charming, and frequently painfully funny character Ben Gottlieb, who hasn't felt at home in his quaint upstate New York town since his novelist wife died in an accident several months ago. Given that he's moved back in with his controlling mothers, whose intentions are good, he hasn't felt at home either.

Because Lhakpa has always believed that the mountains purify her soul, she goes back to her house one last time. The film follows her journey from childhood to her current life in Connecticut using archival footage and photographs, eventually incorporating the voices of people whose lives she impacted along the way. However, the excursion produces the most breathtaking video. Teaching Lhakpa's and her brother Mingma's daughters the fundamentals during their first few days at base camp includes teaching them how to cross a crevasse and climb a rope, two of the most terrifying things to see. It also just sounds like a script that has been worked on for so long that producer's notes, focus groups, and rewrites have sapped all of the enthusiasm out of it. There is just no plot to be concerned about in the original, which hums with energy in both its masterful filming and narrative structure. The additions, such as a few flashbacks to Zee's birth tale, feel cheesy and cheap. Simply put, Emmanuel isn't a captivating enough performer to portray Zee as the powerful, quiet cipher that he must be. Although I don't normally like to criticize films that aren't yet out, the fact that Lupita Nyong'o was once involved in this project before COVID stopped production highlights even more problems.

This might be the case because they penned the screenplay themselves, which made it easier for them to tell the story how they had intended. The writing is tight here, as was already said, and it doesn't stray into numerous subplots. A few subplots are introduced, and the director and writer make sure to tie them all together and bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. The directors could have taken their sweet time and added a lot of pointless things purely for fun, since the tale is about the events leading up to the party and the night of it. Films that center on a single night usually go too far, but Incoming stays within reason. This little film has a lot to explain.
