In this intense episode of Hot Mess, Alec, Matthew and award-winning actor, Wilson Cruz, discuss “uncertainty fatigue” a pop culture name for the exhaustion and despair nearly everyone feels in these chaotic times. Starring in CBS All Access “Star Trek: Discovery,” Wilson says he feels deeply about all the horrific, global news, including the pandemic; a contentious election and the racist divide in the U.S. and elsewhere. He’s terrified that the country will take a hard-right turn and, is exhausted by all the emotions stirred up by our shared experiences.
Wilson is enthusiastic about the book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, which he says puts our country’s race relations in an historical and socio-political perspective. Despite the book’s sometimes grim contents, he still feels hopeful. All three guys believe agree that most individuals are good, but they see themselves as part of an enlightened group that needs to speak out about injustice. They are dealing with their own uncertainty fatigue by finding hope and acknowledging that certainty is an illusion. Wilson says that he’s used his time to consider his life and think about changes he needs to make.
Anyone exhausted by despair of our precarious world, will find common ground and hope in this emotion-packed episode.
