How do you know when it’s time to walk away from the fire service you love?

After nearly 25 years as a firefighter, engineer, lieutenant, volunteer firefighter, and fire chief, retired Lt. Rick Carroll knows what it means to build a life around serving others. But his journey into the fire service was anything but ordinary.

Rick first entered the fire service with Cobb County Fire in January 1975 during a recession when jobs were difficult to find. Just months later, he lost that job.

For many people, that would have been the end of the story.

For Rick, it wasn’t.

Eleven years later, he returned to Cobb County Fire and began the career that would help shape the rest of his life.

In this episode of Wind The Q — The Stories Behind The Sirens, Lt. Dodson sits down with retired Lt. Rick Carroll for a conversation spanning nearly five decades of fire service history.

Rick shares what the fire service was like in the 1970s and 1980s, why he came back after being away for 11 years, his years of service with Cobb County and the City of Dallas Fire Department, becoming a fire officer and fire chief, leadership lessons learned over a career, faith, retirement, and what life looks like when the uniform finally comes off.

But at the center of the conversation is something Rick believes deeply:

“I think fire service is a calling. I also think if it’s not, you won’t stay.”

That raises a much bigger question.

What does the fire service really do to a marriage?

     In this episode of Wind The Q — The Stories Behind The Sirens, Lt. Dodson sits down with firefighter Travis Moore and his wife, Ashlee Moore, for an honest conversation about the side of the fire service that doesn't always get talked about: what happens at home.

     For firefighters, a 24-hour shift becomes normal. The tones drop, the crew responds, the shift ends, and eventually we go home. But for the husband, wife, and family waiting on the other side of that front door, the experience can look very different.

Travis and Ashlee share both sides of that relationship.

     They talk about what goes through a firefighter spouse's mind when their firefighter leaves for shift, the worry that may never be spoken out loud, and what happens when a firefighter comes home physically—but hasn't completely left the firehouse behind mentally.

The conversation gets into one of the hardest parts of firefighter relationships: communication.

Why don't firefighters always talk about what they've experienced?

Why can talking to another firefighter sometimes feel easier than talking to a spouse?

When is silence an attempt to protect the person you love—and when can that same silence begin creating distance in a marriage?

     Ashlee shares what the fire service looks like from the spouse's perspective, including recognizing when something is different after a shift, navigating missed time with family, and supporting a firefighter without feeling responsible for fixing everything.

     Travis shares the firefighter's side of that same conversation: transitioning from the station back into family life, deciding what should and shouldn't come home, and why firefighters sometimes struggle to explain what they're carrying.

     Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, we remember where we were when the world changed. But do we remember who we became the morning after?

     In this special 25th Anniversary episode of Wind The Q, Lt. Dodson reflects on experiencing 9/11 while working commercial construction in an Atlanta high-rise, then looks back on that day through the eyes of a firefighter and company officer.

     This episode remembers the 343 FDNY members, the victims at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and aboard Flight 93, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families left with empty chairs. But the conversation doesn't end on September 11th.

     It continues into September 12th, when Americans gave blood, volunteered, prayed, raised flags, checked on neighbors and showed what service, sacrifice and community could look like.
Twenty-five years later, the question isn't only "Where were you?"
It's also: What did we learn, what have we forgotten, and who are we choosing to be today?

     September 11th showed us what human beings can do to one another. September 12th showed us what human beings can do for one another.

What if the last call you ran with someone was just that... the last call?

In this solo episode of Wind The Q, we take a hard look at something firefighters rarely think about in the moment: we never know when we're experiencing something for the final time.
