Many Katy 3rd-5th graders were looking forward to meeting with author and illustrator Jerry Craft via Zoom. That meeting was canceled after a group of Katy parents raised concerns over the books referencing critical race theory.
Craft is the winner of the 2020 Newberry Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award, and the Kirkus Prize for his graphic novel, “New Kid” and its sequel “Class Act.”
Katy mom Bonnie Anderson received the flyer from her twin third grader’s school, like many Katy parents did.
“I review all of their instructional material whether it’s a math worksheet or something like this,” says Bonnie Anderson, who previously ran for a Katy ISD Board of Trustee position.
Anderson read Jerry Craft’s books and grew concerned over how racism was presented in them and believes they push a critical race theory curriculum.

  • Republicans Don't Care About Children PLUS Fox17 Checks Pastor Greg Locke
Fox News Covid denier and snake oil salesperson Laura Ingraham squawked that more kids died from the flu than during Covid, so it's no big deal.
Is COVID over now? I didn't get the memo.
"Only 555 kids have died from the entire pandemic," Ingraham said. Which is less than the flu killed.
Ingraham used the age group of 0-17 to further bash Dr. Fauci. COVID isn't the problem now, it's Dr. Fauci.
Ingraham claims CDC figures say "during the last two flu seasons," 911 children and teenagers under 18 died of the flu.
By comparison, only 555 have died from COVID throughout the entire pandemic.
Laura Ingraham is telling Fox News viewers to not protect their babies, children, and young adults because of Dr. Fauci.
That's crazy. And absolutely cruel to the parents and grandparents of children who have died of either the flu OR Covid. Come on, Laura. At some point, you have to have reached bottom.
The initial phase of COVID wasn't as infectious or deadly to our children and young adults, but the Delta variant is wreaking havoc on our younger population.
Infections among our youth has risen exponentially as well as the death rates.
Twitter responded, "So it's 555 dead kids near the end of September. Near the end of July it was 358. That means that August and September saw 200 kids die of covid. That's 3 dead kids a day. The previous 16 months the average was less than one a day. Seems bad?

  • Hubris And Sea Level Rise In Miami
Building collapse could be a sign of things to come
All around Miami, signs of climate change are visible to the naked eye.
Sea levels around the region are rising an average of 9 millimetres a year, according to analysis of federal data.
That's triple the global average, leaving more than 120,000 properties at risk of being lost completely.
A concrete path provides a short space between skyscrapers and the open ocean
Much of Miami sits on dredged wetlands, with little to no barrier between skyscrapers and the open ocean.(ABC News: Emily Olson)
In the past two decades, so-called sunny day flooding has jumped more than 320 per cent, becoming such a common occurrence that residents can be seen paddleboarding down paved roads at high tide.
Much of the city is built on reclaimed wetlands and barrier islands, where engineers once chopped down protective mangroves and trucked in sand to cover over porous limestone.
Chloride ions, found in sea salt, are carried to the base of these structures by flowing water or humid hurricane winds. Chloride can eat through concrete, rusting metal bars and leaving a building's foundation shaky.
It's the kind of wear and tear that one can see walking through the city's historic districts, where pastel-painted art deco buildings lend the city its raffish flair.
