Fifty years, four countries and several of the world's great wine houses later, he's the manresponsible for Almaviva, the Franco-Chilean wine born from a handshake betweenBaroness Philippine de Rothschild and Concha y Toro. In this conversation he tellsJane Anson how a phone call in his mother's kitchen in Sintra led him back to awine he'd tasted and admired since 1996, why the Andes and the Pacific fightfor control of the same vineyard every afternoon, and what it took for oneestate to become, before Opus One, the very first non-Bordeaux wine ever soldthrough the négociant system. 🍷Subscribe to the channel ✨ Like thisvideo to support fine wine storytelling 🌍Explore more episodes featuring global wine leaders ✔️ Find thewines on Wine-Searcher https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/vina+alma+viva+puente+alto+maipo+valley+chile ✔️ Check onJane's latest tasting notes https://janeanson.com #Almaviva #WinePodcast #ChileanWine#Rothschild #ConchaYToro #Bordeaux #FineWine #WineStories #JaneAnson

Then they walk away from all of it. That's how Florence and Daniel Cathiard came to Bordeaux: not through wine families or wine school, but through a memory. Years earlier, before terrifying downhill races, a coach had handed the young ski team a glass of red Cabernet to help them sleep —decades ahead of the French Paradox headlines. It stuck. So when the Cathiards decided to change their lives completely, they went looking for a left-bank one block Cabernet estate, sight almost unseen, and found Château Smith Haut Lafitte: one block, ringed by forest, its tower broken, its vines poorly kept — and something about it they couldn't walk away from. In this episode, Florence tells host Suzanne Mustacich the full story: renovating a derelict château, converting to organic farming before anyone else in Bordeaux was doin git, watching daughter Mathilde build the skincare brand Caudalie from a backpack and a small motorbike, hosting a king who insisted on making his own barrel, and expanding into Pomerol and Napa Valley — all while handing the keys, gradually, to the next generation. 🍷 Subscribe to the channel ✨ Like this video to support fine wine storytelling 🌍 Explore more episodes featuring global wine leaders ✔️ Find the wines on Wine-Searcher Château Smith Haut Lafitte https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/8684-chateau-smith-haut-lafitte Cathiard Vineyard https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/191646-cathiard-vineyard ✔️ Check on Jane's latest tasting notes https://janeanson.com #JaneAnsonWinePodcast#FlorenceCathiard #SmithHautLafitte #Bordeaux #Napa #CathiardVineyard #Caudalie#OrganicWine #WineTourism #FamilyEstate #WineSearcher Chapters00:00 The Heart of Château Smith Lafitte 02:49 A Journey from Business to Wine 06:10 The Vision Behind Château Smith Lafitte 09:00 Organic Farming and Environmental Commitment 11:49 Royal Connections and Organic Advocacy 15:13 Reflections on Vintages and Vineyard Life 18:00 Expanding Horizons: New Ventures 20:53 Navigating Challenges in Napa 24:11 Family Legacy and Future Aspirations

Host Suzanne Mustacich asks him the obvious question — how do you hold all that together? Christian talks about the total conviction that a great wine must be the unique individual expression of its vineyard, and a deliberately decentralised structure that leaves each estate's team to pursue that expression on its own terms. He remembers discovering Bordeaux with his father, falling in love with wine, and driving to work along the Route des Châteaux. He talks about the excitement of discovering new vineyards, opening the first bottle from his English sparkling wine project, and the privilege of being able to make wine every day. A personal conversation about vineyards, wine and the joy of still being fascinated by them. 🍷 Subscribe to the channel ✨ Like this video to support fine wine storytelling 🌍 Explore more episodes featuring global wine leaders ✔️Find the wines on Wine-Searcher Château Pichon Baron https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/17440-chateau-pichon-longueville-baron Disznoko https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/49846-disznoko Quinta do Noval https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/22229-quinta-do-noval Outpost Wines https://www.wine-searcher.com/merchant/27103-outpost-wines ✔️Check on Jane's latest tasting notes https://janeanson.com Chapters0:00 A life spent chasing wonder 0:44 Suzanne introduces Christian Seely 1:22 A snapshot of the AXA Millésimes portfolio 2:15 No group winemaking policy — decentralisation as a philosophy 4:10 Visiting the vineyards through harvest 4:52 Getting his start: a gap year in Bordeaux with his father 6:38 The drive to work past Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 7:52 Platt Vineyard: fog, the Pacific, and West Sonoma Coast 10:07 Outpost: volcanic soils and altitude on Howell Mountain 12:50 Domaine de l'Arlot: Burgundy's rare monopoles 14:59 A quarter-hectare next to DRC 16:23 Bordeaux vs Burgundy, and Pichon Baron's three wines 19:51 Le Griffon Blanc: grafting Suduiraut onto Pauillac 3:35 Tokaj: Aszú, puttonyos, and the wine of kings 24:53 Disznókő and the fall of communism 30:45 Quinta do Noval: field blends and the Nacional parcel 38:38 Blending a consistent house-style tawny port 43:19 Coates & Seely: building English sparkling wine from scratch 48:03 The dream dinner party#WinePodcast #ChristianSeely #AXAMillesimes #Bordeaux #Tokaj #Douro #Burgundy #NapaValley #EnglishSparklingWine

You want to make a difference — just do it." Jane Anson and Chinedu Rita Rosa share the inspiring story of creating Bordeaux Mentor Week, a program designed to open doors and foster diversity in the Bordeaux wine industry: from a garden conversation into a week-long bootcamp that has now brought 28 scholars from roughly 20 countries into Bordeaux's wine industry. They walk through it all — the frustration that started it, the first six scholars chosen on a shoestring budget, the sponsors and estates who said yes when nobody had a track record yet, the visa nightmares nobody warns you about, and the moment at a right bank château dinner when a scholar's tears revealed that imposter syndrome doesn't disappear once you've made it through the door. If you've ever thought about starting a mentorship program, a non-profit, or any kind of grassroots initiative — in wine or anywhere else — this is the practical, honest version of how it's actually done. With huge thanks to everyone who has backed Bordeaux Mentor Week, including the Gérard Basset Foundation, the Académie du Vin Library, Château La Lagune, Château Bellefont-Belcier, Château Biac, Bernard Magrez Start-Up Win, Christian Holthausen, and every estate, sponsor and mentor who has opened a door. 🍷 Subscribe to the channel✨ Like this video to support fine wine storytelling🌍 Explore more episodes featuring global wine leaders✔️ Check the latest updates on the Bordeaux Mentor Week at https://janeanson.com/ Chapters00:00 Introduction to Bordeaux Mentor Week02:50 The Genesis of Mentoring in Bordeaux06:08 Building the Foundation: First Steps08:52 Challenges and Solutions in Logistics11:51 Recruiting Mentors and Scholars14:40 Learning from Mistakes17:49 The Impact of the Program21:04 Overcoming Imposter Syndrome23:42 Success Metrics and Achievements27:03 Unexpected Outcomes and Connections29:45 Advice for Aspiring Change-Makers32:35 The Future of Bordeaux Mentor Week #WinePodcast #BordeauxMentorWeek #Mentorship #DiversityInWine #Bordeaux #WineIndustry #NonProfit #JaneAnson #WineEducation #ChangeMakers

Twenty-odd years later, he's still there—running five Bordeaux estates, including two of the appellation's most quietly serious addresses, Clos du Clocher and Château Bonalgue, alongside the family's historic négociant house, Ets Audy. In this episode of the Wine Podcast, host Jane Anson sits down with Bourotte as his family marks 100 years in Pomerol, and the conversation moves easily between deep history and hard-won, practical wisdom. Jean-Baptiste explains how Clos du Clocher's dense blue clay and Bonalgue's mixed gravel-sand-clay terroir produce two very different styles of Pomerol, what a négociant actually does inside La Place de Bordeaux, and what a career at Cartier taught him about pride in a product and telling an honest story. He also shares the centenary manga he commissioned—illustrated using the estate's own blue clay—his picks for what to drink right now, and the lunch he didn't realise he was sharing with DRC's Aubert de Villaine. 🍷 This episode is brought to you by iDealwine: https://www.idealwine.com/en/buy-wine/sale-vente-primeur?order-by=vintage-desc&utm_source=jane+anson&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=en+primeur ✨ iDealwine has kindly given a special discount, exclusively for Jane Anson Wine Voices listeners.
