Although not as famous as his brother, Frederick the Wise, or as large a personality as his son, John Frederick the Magnanimous, John is an important figure of the Reformation. As Elector of Saxony, John was instrumental in the formation of the Schmalkaldic League, “protested at the Second Diet of Speyer, and was a signer of the Augsburg Confession.
