  • Listen to WIIM Radio: The Line-Blander Edition

Welcome to another WIIM Radio mailbag! We’ll be recording a new episode tonight with the plan of having it out tomorrow morning for your listening pleasure just prior to the Calgary game as the Wings continue their Western Canada road trip. Here’s a list of topics we’ll get into:

The Wings’ Play of Late - We kinda missed the bulk of the big losing streak and the Wings have looked pretty decent coming out of that. We’ll go over the reasons and thoughts behind it.
The Return of AA - Yay! We don’t have to guess anymore about when the guy’s going to re-sign and how the team will make room. Instead we’ll talk about how he’s fitting into the lineup.
Blashill’s Blender - The Wings’ coach has made waves lately talking about retiring the line blender only to have that last less than a game and now not even living up to his promise of starting games with consistent lines. Is it really all bad though?
Around the League - A three-team blockbuster just went down and it impacts our division. Who won the Duchene deal? Elsewhere, what are the surprise teams a month into the NHL season?
Positivity Corner - We’ll take a break to be nice about stuff.
Reader Questions - Your favorite section and mine.. you ask us the great questions we’re used to and we’ll give you the stellar answers you’ve come to expect. The burrito questions last time were good. I expect similar quality.
Looking ahead - The Wings will be finishing up in Calgary and then finish the month with 8 of 9 games at home. We’ll gaze into our crystal ball and let you know how things will play out.

  • Fer Sure - Episode 9: Craig Custance

Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad):

Around the League: (00:00 - 27:22) We use a listener question as a jumping off point to talking about Arizona, Vegas, who will finish in the NHL basement, and who we think will be in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Interview - Craig Custance: (27:22 - 1:19:22) We had planned for about 30 minutes, but the discussion went so well that it ended up being a little over 50 minutes. We mainly talked about his book “Behind the Bench,” but we talked a little NHL, as well as The Athletic.
Cross Checks and Wrap Up: (1:19:22- End) Jay and I debut a new segment called Cross Checks, and it doesn’t quite go as planned. Or does it?

  • WIIM Radio: The World is Your Burrito Edition

Welcome to the newest edition of WIIM Radio! This time we’ve got me, Kyle, and Lauren joined by first-timer Mike Bremer with us! Let’s break in the new guy. Here’s what we got up to:

The Red Wings so Far - The team’s performance to this point versus expectations for them are pretty much falling right in line with what you can get in small sample sizes. The defense is still a tire-fire, but the forwards are showing the kind of promise we’ve been loving.
Around the World/League - A lot of talk about how we’re all ready for the Athanasiou situation to un-Datsyuk itself and for us to just get an answer so we can all get on with our lives. Elsewhere, the Rangers are hilariously bad and the Devils are actually fun!
Positivity Corner - Love all around. Oh man, just so much love. Somebody get a bucket to clean it up. Gross.
Reader Questions - Y’all didn’t disappoint with the burrito theme. This was a really fun segment full of delicious questions.
Upcoming Games - The Wings have a full plate coming up in the next couple weeks. Will we fill that plate with some more of Big Tony’s spicy meatballs?

  • Fer Sure - Episode 8: The Young NHL Season

Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time:

Contenders and Pretenders - Teams: (00:00 - 31:12) What NHL teams will keep up their hot starts? What fan bases should be worried?
Contenders and Pretenders - Players: (31:12 - 47:06) Will Alex Ovechkin keep shooting at a 34% clip?
NHL 18 Initial Thoughts: (47:06- 56:01) We’ve both had time to play the full version of the new hockey game. Here’s what we think.
Mailbag: (56:01 - 1:18:50) We had a few questions to answer. What do we think about the pace of the games? Why does Jay sound better now? Is the Athletic worth it?

  • Listen to WIIM Radio: The Opening Night Edition

Welcome to our latest WIIM Radio! We’ve got me, Kyle, Mike, and Prashanth joining us this week to dive right into the 2017-18 season for the Red Wings. Here’s what we got up to:

The Athanasiou Situation: We talk about where things stand with the last-holdout RFA in the entire league and where all the blame should lie in regards to why he isn’t signed. Would a one or two-year deal change the way he plays or his motivation to arbitration? We also talk how the Red Wings ought to be using him if/when he does come back.
The Red Wings Roster: We break down the forwards and defense, looking at lines and pairings to see how the final roster played out. The Forwards are kind of decent, but obviously they have to play in front of a still-suspect defense.
Around the League: While we’ve stamped out as much excitement around here as we can, there’s an entire league to stamp out and get excited for! Is the Atlantic going to be the laughingstock? Can McDavid dummy the whole league? Will Jagr make Calgary a big difference-maker?
Positivity Corner: After a lengthy trip around the greener grass on the other side of the fence in the league, we take a break to smell the roses in our own garden.
Reader Questions: You asked and we answered on some great reader questions from you all this week, including our outlook, our drinks of choice, our prospects, and our prospects of getting other prospects.
Looking Ahead: With just two games this week, we’ll prognosticate the results for you.
As always, WIIM Radio is rated R for language and coulrophilia.

Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time:

RIP Dave Strader: (00:00 - 09:04 Broadcast legend Dave Strader died shortly before we recorded this. Ugh.
The Anthem and the Flag: (09:04 - 30:17) We talk about the elephant in the room, the anthem protests and the larger issues they raise.
Fantasy Hockey: (30:17- 50:44) We give you our do’s and dont’s for this upcoming fantasy hockey season.
Interview: (50:44 - 1:18:50) We have a great interview with Corey Sznajder
Season Preview : (1:18:50 - End) Who will win each division? We’ll let you know.

  • Fer Sure - Episode 6: Principles, Parros, Challenges, and Kate Frese

Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time:

NHL Declaration of Principles: (00:00 - 26:57) The NHL released eight principles. We talk about why this is a bit strange, and how to make them better.
Parros Joins DoPS: (26:57 - 41:55) George Parros joins the Department of Player Safety. Good idea or bad idea?
Interview: (41:55 - 1:15:00) Kate Frese (@KateFresePhoto) joins us to talk about what it’s like to be a photographer, about photographing NHL games, and a little about David Lynch.
Rule Changes: (1:15:00 - 1:26:20) The NHL made two small rule changes.
Puck Tales: (1:26:20 - End) You may think you know the reason Teemu Selanne was able to break the NHL rookie scoring record, but Jay will set you straight.

  • WIIM Radio: The Season Warmup Edition

Welcome to the newest WIIM Radio! This time around we’ve got me, Kyle and Jeff working through our Red Wings feelings. Here’s what we got into:

The Prospects Tourney - The Wings’ kids ended up taking 6th, but had trouble in the small sample. The standouts we were looking for did decently well, even though we’re sure they’re disappointed in how they did.
Training Camp - We break down the reasoning for the team breakdown and how we’re actually really excited about camp starting and hockey season ramping up, but also the worry about Svechnikov starting off on the B-team.
Sheahan/Athanasiou - Will the Wings move out Sheahan to make space for AA? Is AA’s holdout ever going to end? What about the idea of trading Sheahan to Pittsburgh? All this and more!
Positivity Corner - I love Jeff’s segue into this section. That is all.
Season Outlook - A quick look around the league and the division has us prognosticating on whether the Wings can avoid the Atlantic basement, how good the Stars really are, and what’s up in Washington.
Reader Questions - Not too many questions for this one, but the quality was real high, so we got some pretty good discussion going based off what you asked.
