Wining About Herstory

In today's edition of Queer people have ALWAYS existed, Emily travels back to ancient Mesopotamia to meet the Goddess, Ishtar, a gender swapping entity of war, love, and life itself! Then, Kelley tells the wild story of moving-target Belle Boyd, a Confederate spy who taught an enslaved girl how to read, charged Confederates for booze, and married a Union Soldier. To stay the least, this gal is MESSY. Nod emphatically and beware the old Summer Wine Pack because we're wining about herstory!

The ladies are QUEER. They are HERE. Get USED TO IT! To celebrate Pride month, Kelley tells the story of Lucy Diggs Slowe, the other half of the Mary Burrell power couple. Lucy spent her life trying to advance academics for women while having to hide her own identity from the world. Then, Emily recounts her recent visit to Congressional Cemetery's Gay Corner through the story of Cmdr. Alyce Victorine Grillet, a queer, poly sailor who proved that sexuality and service can coexist. Go pet a dog, bake a cake, and tell a cheesy dad joke, because we're wining about herstory!

First, Kelley tells the story of Aileen Cole Stewart, a Red Cross nurse who, despite being denied the opportunity to serve overseas in WWI, played an invaluable part in fighting the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on the home front. Then, Emily covers Tsuru Aoki, a Japanese silent film star who straddled stereotypes to give her character's depth, while battling growing Asian hate in the United States.

The ladies are celebrating Memorial Day by talking about our sheroes, government conspiracies, and Big Macs! First, Emily covers Maj. Megan McClung, a Marine Officer who gave everything in the line of duty, but has been declared to be incompliant with the Department of Defense "policies and procedures." Then, Kelley tells the tale of Margaret Cochran, one of many women who, during the American Revolution, had to follow their husbands to war, and stepped up when the rebels needed her the most.

What happens when a maid marries the son of her rich employer? Not what you'd think! Kelley wines about Sarah B. Cochran, a woman who came from a one-dress household and became an absurdly rich business magnate and philanthropist who knew that money wasn't the most important thing in the world, but rather what you do with it. Then, Emily tells the bittersweet tale of Miki Endo, a young woman who found herself in the midst of an epic natural disaster and did everything in her power to ensure others survived. Curl up with your cat and have a lazy day, because we're wining about herstory!

Happy Mothers' Day to mothers of all kinds (especially the motherfuckers!) Emily tells the story of Phoebe 'Febb' Ensminger Burn, a proud, intelligent Southern woman who wrote a letter to her son and changed the course of history. Then, Kelley covers Mary Burrill, a queer black writer and playwright who tackled issues such as systemic racism, the cycle of poverty, access to birth control, bodily autonomy and MANY other issues that we DEFINITELY don't still scream about today. Be a good boy and make your mom cry, because we're wining about herstory!
