Wining About Herstory

First, Kelley tells the story of Penta who, to avoid her pervy brother, cut off her hands, gave birth to a dog, and attended the world's worst pity party. Then, Emily covers Elizabeth 'Baby Doe' Tabor, an ambitious young woman whose meteoric rise and fall is still legendary in Colorado- but what is the truth about this alleged homewrecker/sex worker/gold digger/socialite? Plug in your sauna because we're wining about herstory!

With thanks to Li Perez, the ladies are drinking some GORG Stella Pino Grigio to wine about boobs, women, and how history hates women! First, Emily tells the story of author Nobuku Yoshiya, an open lesbian who defined the Shojo and Yuri genres and went to extreme legal lengths to be with her partner! Then, Kelley tells the story of Vasilissa Vasilyenva, a Russian woman who preferred wearing men's clothes, much to the confusion of the Tsar. When the Tsar began going to great lengths to determine Vasilissa's sex (none of which involved having a conversation) things got weird. Secret double lives! Aerial jail breaks! Extreme sandwiches! This week's episode has it all. First, Emily explores the history of LGBTQ+ folks in the military through the story of Master Sergeant Helen Godvin. Throughout her 20 year career in the Air Force, Helen was forced to live a double life due to the U.S. Military's homophobic policies. At work, she was a single straight woman and at home, she was a loving mother and partner. Despite the incredible stress and paranoia of hiding her sexuality from the military, Helen never faltered and never failed. Then, Kelley tells the twisty (and a little too relatable) tale of Nadine Vaujou who fell into a toxic relationship with a chronic criminal that spiraled into an epic prison break involving fruit, secret cake notes, and a helicopter. Chow down on some Milk Duds and stay strapped with nectarines because we're wining about herstory!
