  • Podcast #124: Stress IQ System and Journal Writing

    Today’s guest in the Winning Teams Podcast is Geoff Nicholson who hails from Newcastle in the UK. He is the founder of GN coaching and the creator of Stress IQ, a system that combines stress management for success and life coaching strategies.
    Geoff admits to not being any good at dealing with his emotions even as a young child. He didn’t talk about his issues and that may have led to one of the most life-changing experiences in his life.
    In late 2000, Geoff experienced a series of illnesses which he thought nothing at first but progressed into him spending years housebound, in a wheelchair or mobility scooter and contemplating suicide.
    However, Geoff had a weird moment of clarity that stop him from going through with it. Listen here to the full story.
    Geoff decided then to get better and make sure that he’s always the best version of his self. He became fascinated about what makes people go from desperation to inspiration. What takes people from their darkest moment to actually flip their life over and build confidence, self-esteem, and worth?
    Geoff doesn’t connect his illnesses to his inability to communicate his feelings rather; he thought of it as a chronic stress-related condition. Back then, he refused to talk about his issues and he reached that breaking point without proper release. His recovery resulted in him setting up GN coaching and creating the Stress IQ system.
    In this episode, Geoff talks about:

    * How Stress response effects both physically and mentally.
    * How the Stress IQ system works.
    * The concept of Stoicism Dichotomy of Control.
    * A simple question that changed Geoff’s life, “What is it that I want to feel?” – don’t focus on things you don’t want to feel.
    * The Significance of Journal Writing in Stress Management, and how to start.

    Book Recommendation, Habits and Where to Get in Touch:
    Geoff recommends the book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It’s an amazing book that he reads every year.
    Geoff gets up in the morning and drinks a liter of water to keep him hydrated. He meditates for  5-10 minutes and then, start his journaling.
    After, he goes in front of his mirror and does his affirmation to make sure he is in the right mindset to get on the day.
    Geoff and his wife occasionally go on a nice walk, probably, 4 miles a day. Before sleeping, he dedicates 15-20 minutes planning for his activities the next day. He relaxes for a while and finally, sets his sleep tracker.
    To reach Geoff, you can go visit his website: https://www.geoffnicholson.uk/

  • Podcast #123: Rise from a Hard Landing- Florida’s Space Coast Economic Crisis and Recovery

    Today’s guest is someone I’ve been looking forward to having in my show for quite some time. Lynda Weatherman is the president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission (EDC) of Florida’s Space Coast. The area covers the Palm Bay, Melbourne, Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) along the East Coast of Florida.
    We met last year (2018) in the US and, I can tell you, she is absolutely a Human Dynamo! In 2007, Lynda was honored with the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. It is the highest honor NASA awards to both government and non-government employees.  Despite her impressive and massive achievements, she remains humble.
    Lynda started her career as a teacher and taught for a couple of years. She then studied Master in Economic Development and left for Hong Kong University to further her education; specialising in International Planning and Development.
    Lynda has been committed to her job as the President/ CEO of the EDC since 1995. She believes that an economy cannot be changed in just 4 years. Albeit, almost a generation is needed to be able to diversify an economy or mitigate any challenges.
    In this interview, Lynda shares the incredible story behind the event that shook the entire area of Florida’s Space Coast. Everybody, people in or out of the US, know of the massive economic downturn with the end of NASA’s shuttle program.
    This resulted in the devastation of the area – unemployment, real estate meltdown and a failing economy coinciding with the deepest and longest recession in the history of the country.
    For a context of what happened, you can check out the 60 Minutes episode – A Hard Landing
    However, they were able to rise above the crisis and according to Lynda, the unemployment rate is now less than 4%.

    “As I’ve said to one of the openings at the OneWeb, economists will be writing about what happened here for years to come because it was a turn around in less than 6 years” – Lynda Weatherman

    It is really fascinating and inspiring how Lynda, her colleagues and board of directors in the EDC and everyone in the community joined hands and succeeded. It was tough as well because people in the area, particularly Central and North Brevard, were haunted by the remembrance of the Apollo program layoffs and shutdown in the 70s.
    But Lynda and the EDC had a Plan. Listen to the full episode here.

    “There are things that can’t be controlled but the key was to let everyone know there’s a pragmatic, realistic and well thought out Plan.” – Lynda Weatherman

    Aside from the plan, Lynda had also done an excellent job at carefully shifting people’s mindset. She showed everyone that she’s not indifferent to the problem but she also didn’t overpromise.
    Lynda took on the challenge to understand the space industry. She sought out industry experts and tried to see the situation through the lens of her own expertise. She asked herself this question, “What opportunities are taking place in this industry that we can exploit?”
    Florida’s Space Coast is primarily a space airport and the country’s launch site for many years. The EDC and the community want that back.

  • Podcast #122: The Power of Masterminds

    Today’s guest on the Winning Teams podcast is a return guest and we are delighted to have him back. He is Aaron Walker, a veteran businessman who lives in Nashville, Tennessee and is a serial entrepreneur. Aaron is also the founder of the company, “View From the Top” and mastermind group, “Iron Sharpens Iron”.
    Aaron has created many successful businesses over the years. He achieved all this through a great support network – mastermind group, and his own hard work. Aaron did not have the proverbial “silver spoon” in his youth –  he started out from humble beginnings.
    “Big things come from small beginnings.” as Aaron says.
    But not everything has been easy sailing for Aaron. He also faced challenges but one tragic incident changed his life forever on August 1, 2001. It made him think, “What would happen to my legacy had that been me?” Listen here to the story
    Aaron was able to bounce back. When he retired at 50, a couple of his friends from his mastermind group – Dave Ramsey and Dan Miller to name a few, suggested that he start coaching. He was reluctant at first but he decided to go ahead..
    Now, his coaching business is flourishing. Aaron created mastermind groups to cope with the increase in workload, instead of doing 1:1. Aaron also knew that mastermind groups would benefit his clients as it did for him for 20 years.
    In this episode, Aaron talks more about:

    * What are mastermind groups and how to join his own mastermind group, “Iron Sharpens Iron”?
    * Isolation is the enemy of success.
    * The distinction between coaching and mentoring from Aaron’s perspective.
    * The four attributes to success in life – grit, authenticity, determination, and perseverance.

    Book Recommendation, Habits and Where to Get in Touch:
    Aaron could list a whole plethora of books but Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss is an amazing book he has recently read and recommends.
    He is also a Christian by faith so Aaron starts his day reading the Bible. He spends his time in meditation, prayer, praise and worship and scripture memorization. His work also follows a regimented schedule where days are planned 3 months in advance in Google documents.
    Reach out to Aaron at www.viewfromthetop.com.

    David has read a lot of books that have made an impact but the one which ties up with the things he has shared today is The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. It talks about the 80/20 rule and how people should design their plan and schedule so that they are focused on the 20% input that will produce 80% of the success they want in life. This book is highly recommended!
    David also likes to plan ahead the night before. He makes schedules of the things he needs to do and batch his time, for example, he does all his podcast recordings on one day and does other things the next. He doesn’t sporadically do things but has a clear plan – categorizing and focusing on one thing he needs to accomplish and if he has enough time to do it and do it properly. This shows such amazing discipline!

  • Podcast #120: Seven Stories for Successful Salespeople

    Can you believe that just by telling stories you can achieve sales success?
    Let me introduce you to our fascinating guest in today’s Winning Team’s Podcast, Mike Adams, who uses this sales process of great storytelling. He first started as an engineer then, turned into a successful salesperson. Mike has sold and managed sales teams from all over the world, including UK, Russia, India, Vietnam, Australia, and other places for various big organizations like Siemens, Nokia, and Halliburton. He’s also the author and publisher of the book, ‘Seven Stories Every Salesperson Must Tell’. Very impressive, isn’t he?
    According to Mike, his career was an unplanned one. He studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Tasmania and got a job in the oil and gas industry. However, an opportunity came – a job in Norway he was interested but it was a sale job which he didn’t want to do. He consulted with his wife who was pregnant at that time. His wife told him that she wanted to have a go and from there on, his sales career started. Of course, there were ups and downs but Mike feels he has had a lot of good fortune. It was enough to make him stay in sales.
    In this episode, Mike speaks about:

    * A brief history of his career
    * “The missing ingredient in sales success is the ability to tell stories”
    * What are the seven stories and how to incorporate them into the buying cycle/ sales process?
    * The Seven Stories:

    * Connection Phase/ Hook Phase

    * Personal story
    * Company story
    * Key Staff story

    * Fight Phase

    * Insight story
    * Success story

    * Closing/ landing the deal Phase

    * Value story
    * Sales Manager story

    * Parts of a Success Story

    * Successful client
    * Problem
    * Guide
    * Plan
    * Called to action
    * Failure scenario

    * Storytelling is a Know, Like and Trust me foundation and sequence.
    * People remember stories more than a load of stats.
    * Is storytelling a skill?

    For many salespeople, the real challenge is not getting the first meeting, the second meeting, but actually closing the sales.
    The “Seven Stories Every Salesperson Must Tell” book is a great manual for any salesperson and sales manager to have and you can buy it in Amazon.

    Book Recommendation, Habits and Where to Get in Touch:
    Mike highly recommends a book that really challenged the way he thought about selling. Its title is Let’s Get Real or Let’s Not Play by Mahan Khalsa.
    He starts his day with an espresso coffee from his super coffee machine from Milan that he lovingly cleans and looks after every day. He absolutely loves coffee! Mike also generally pre-commits himself to ensure that that commitment is there to get something specific completed. He actually paid someone to help him write his book not because he needed the help but it was so he becomes committed to finishing it. He describes it as knowing himself well enough to give something he can’t get around so he has no choice but to f...

  • Podcast #118: The CLICK Technique

    Today’s guest in the Winning Teams Podcast is back by popular demand.  She is Lindsey Anderson, founder of trafficandleads.com. She has acquired the moniker  “One-Click Lindsey” which we will explain later. Her work is all about generating leads and traffic to your website. She specializes in landing pages, email marketing, SEO, etc.
    She recently published a book called the “C.L.I.C.K Technique”, which is truly a brilliant roadmap to getting leads online.
    Lindsey started a web development firm 12 years ago. Customers would come to her to build websites and expect instant sales. “But that’s not how the Internet works!”, she says.
    Her firm has fine-tuned their specialty in digital marketing. Her moniker “One Click Lindsey” came from one of her clients who she shared an office building with. This customer asked her help to generate more traffic and leads for his business. It was a long process but eventually, she was able to get that “one-click” after 6 to 8 weeks of trial and error and testing.
    Her customer was very excited. When they met at the front door as per usual, he said to her, “Well, well, well…if it isn’t One-Click Lindsey.” And it clicked for her! “One-Click Lindsey” is easier to remember than Lindsey Anderson.
    That’s what she does! She helps people generate more traffic and leads through digital marketing.
    In this episode, hear more from Lindsey on these topics:
    – Get some of her strategies that she writes about in her book and she explains the title C.L.I.C.K (Curiosity, Land, Irresistible offer, Cultivating the relationship and Keep going)
    – How to look at your website?
    – Key component parts of the Landing Page
    – The “best” lead magnet or an irresistible offer
    – The importance of Email marketing
    – Building your digital calluses
    – Knowing your audience and knowing what you deliver to them
    – Persistence in sales offline is the same as online
    – Outsource (agency) vs In-source (on your own)
    – Facebook marketing
    – Traffic and Leads Membership program
    I highly recommend Lindsey’s book, The C.L.I.C.K technique. It is a great how-to book that brings you step-by-step and demystifies a lot of things. Even non-technical people can understand it (like me!)

     Book Recommendation, Habits and Where to Get in Touch:
    Lindsey recommends Rework by Jason Fried which details a great way to view your business. There are two key points that she loves from this book:

    * Ignore the competition, it keeps you small.
    * Good enough is fine.

    She is also an extremely early riser. She usually wakes up around 4:30 am. Gets up early, gets things done and takes care of her 3 kids who are all under the age of 7. Another thing that she advocates is time blocking which is massively important. When she learned how to time block, it has changed her life and business.  It has helped her get things done throughout the day and achieve her goals.

A great friend suggested it to him. He loves this book and it has helped him understand how to enjoy every single people in front of him.

    Amanda recommends offering continuous learning for new challenges for these millennials.
    It doesn’t have to be expensive, just something that is a little bit outside their comfort zone. Millennials have always been treated as individuals so they have grown up believing that. In the workforce, they still want to be seen as an individual, instead of a cog in a wheel. They want to know on an individual basis that what they are doing is impacting the greater good and the company as a whole.
    Two big areas that Amanda tends to see that have the greatest room for improvement are the recruitment process and leadership process or “point”.
    The leadership point means developing those frontline leaders, the ones who interact directly with millennial employees.
    In this episode, Amanda shares the book that has had the greatest impact on her. The book she loves is called Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment. It’s an easy read that came out in the early 90s.
    Amanda’s daily rituals consist of waking up at 5 am every morning. She then does a short meditation and thinks about all the things she is grateful for in her life. Next, she works out and does an outdoor boot camp where she sweats it out every day.
