Hello and Happy Day! This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, novelist and life coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, December 26, 2022, and this is Episode #40 of Series 2022. This episode is titled "Turning Storms into Sunshine".
If you are like most people, you are going through a storm in your life. Whether that storm be physical, financial, or relational, it is no fun to find yourself in the middle of it.
But, take heart! Jesus Christ has a way of turning our storms into sunshine.
Yes, you heard that right. No storm lasts forever. After your storm, the sun will shine again. But only if you are in Christ.
Let's take a look at storms to learn more about their why, when, and wherefore.
First, what is a storm? A storm is a disruption in the calm of our lives. A shaking out of the peaceful. A disturbance of our equilibrium. A storm rattles, shakes, annoys, and, if severe, arouses great fear.
The Why. Why does God allow storms in our lives? The purpose of storms is to point us to Jesus. When things are going smoothly, we don't think of our need for God. We think we can handle things pretty well on our own. But when a storm arises and our solutions produce no results, we realize that we need the help of Someone bigger than ourselves. And so, we usually turn to God.
The When. When does God allow storms in our lives? He allows them when we need them. When we are heading in the dangerous direction of pride, arrogance, and self-sufficiency, He will allow a storm. God wants to keep us from falling into complacency, that dangerous state in which we think that we've got everything under control. He wants us to understand that, in reality, He alone is in control of our lives.
The What. What storms does God allow in our lives? He allows those storms that will make us more like Jesus. Every person experiences different storms. Each storm is custom-designed for that individual person. God knows exactly what we need to conform us to His image. And so He allows those customized storms that will best get the job done.
When a storm comes, what should we do? Here are three simple positions to take in order to ride out a storm:
1. PRAY. When a storm strikes, the first thing we should do is pray. We should ask God for strategy in riding out the storm. Sometimes He will deliver us immediately from the storm. Most of the time, however, He will allow us to go through it. But He will always weather the storm with us. Just as He remained in the boat with His disciples during the storm, so will He remain in the boat with us as we sail through our storm.
2. TRUST. When a storm hits, we need to trust that Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us. Remember. He is allowing the storm to make us strong. Just as muscles do not develop without resistance, neither does character develop without resistance. The storms of life provide the resistance necessary to build cha...
