The ShepherdAll week long Pastor Frank dutifully prepared for what he felt was going to be an essential message. He has taken countless hours studying the various passages about shepherds and their sheep. He was careful to include some poignant stories and illustrations. Pastor Frank practiced the message throughout the week. On Sunday, Pastor Frank gave his all as he preached what he felt was an excellent message about shepherds and his sheep. Pastor Frank explained that sheep need lots of guidance, and that a shepherd’s job is to stay close to the sheep, protect them from wild animals, and keep them from wandering off. He reinforced his point about how the shepherd knows his sheep, and they recognize his voice with https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+10:3andversion=NLT (John 10:3). The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.Pastor Frank went on to reinforce the concept of the closeness between the shepherd and his sheep. He said that the people of the church were God’s sheep. As he was coming to the close of his message, he asked, “If you are the sheep, who is the shepherd?” It was pretty obvious he was indicating that he was the shepherd of his flock.

After a few seconds of silence, little Johnny shouted: “Jesus! Jesus is the shepherd.”

Pastor Frank was caught by surprise with that response and asked Johnny, “Well then Johnny, who am I?”

Johnny furrowed his brow and thought for a few moments and then spoke up, “Well, I guess you must be a sheepdog.”

Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today’s current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. Our focus for the next several months on Worldview Wednesday is Mastering the Bible, through a series of brief insights. These insights are extracted from a book of the same title from one of today’s most prominent Hebrew Scholars, Dr. Micheal S. Heiser. This book is a collection of insights designed to help you understand the Bible better. When we let the Bible be what it is, we can understand it as the original readers did, and as its writers intended. Each week we will explore two insights.

Mastering The Bible – Revelation’s Date and Connections To The Old TestamentInsight Seventy-Seven: The Date of the Writing of Revelation Is Important for Its InterpretationMost of the books of the New Testament can be dated with reasonable certainty. We know when Peter and Paul lived and died, for example, and their lives can be crosschecked with events in the book of Acts, which in turn can be aligned with Roman history to a large degree. The case of John and Revelation is harder, and the interpretive stakes are higher.

The key question for the date of Revelation is whether it was written before or after AD 70, the year the Jewish temple was destroyed. If Revelation was written before that date, much of the content of the book could be interpreted as leading to that cataclysmic event. That would mean most (some would say all) of the prophecies in the book have already been fulfilled. If it was written after AD 70, then the book really can’t be viewed that way—the prophecies would be still awaiting fulfillment. That’s a substantial interpretive gap.

There is no explicit reference to the temple being destroyed within the book itself. That suggests that the event had not happened—which would favor a pre-AD 70 date for the book. The other view—that the book was written after AD 70 - objects that this is an argument from silence. The debate opens with those fundamental differences. Do John’s words indicate that Jerusalem and its temple were literally still standing and under attack? If that’s the case, then the city was destroyed in three and one-half years, and the book was written before AD 70. And that, in turn, is a serious reason to think it is not pointing to a future beyond our time.Ironically, the view that sees the prophecies as ‘‘literally” future-oriented must still interpret this passage symbolically—that https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelations+11%3A1-2andversion=NLT (Revelation 11:1-2) wasn’t about the actual temple a few years before AD 70. That view makes its argument by appealing to other items in the book. God Provides Happiness and PeaceSo many people are desperately seeking happiness and peace, which will provide meaning and a sense of purpose for their lives. There is so much unrest and turmoil in our world today, but this is not anything new. We have seen these types of situations ebb and flow throughout all of history. It stems from the fact that we seek happiness and peace outside of the precepts that God has outlined in His Word. God has clearly described in His Word what is required to have lasting peace, enduring joy, and true happiness in our lives, regardless of the circumstances which surround us. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. Although the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be on our minds, and discussed daily on the major news programs, I think for most of us, we are moving onto a new season of life. We are all trying to determine what our new normal may be for the remainder of this year, at least. Recently in my morning devotional time, I came across five spiritual disciplines that we all should put in our lives and make them a habit. Today let us meditate on:

Since my childhood, I have yearned for the exploration and discovery of new technologies and advancements for the future. I grew up with the original Star Trek series, and even today, while I am on my 64th revolution around the sun, I still dream of traveling in space. Each week we will explore rapidly converging technologies and advancements that will radically change our perspective of life. The topics may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but each area that we explore is already well on its way of becoming a reality in the next couple of decades. To keep with our theme of “Ask Gramps,” I will put our weekly topics in the form of a question to get us on track. So this week’s question is: Hey Gramps, is there one technology that is driving the rapid changes in the world, which will be the catalyst for all other changes?

High-Speed Global ConnectivityWith the global pandemic still impacting the world, and when unrest seems to be nearly everywhere, you have to realize that none of these issues will be long-lasting in the grand scheme of the world. Many of these issues will speed up the exponential technology that is changing our world today. I am using some of the information mentioned in Peter Diamandis’s book, which I mentioned in previous episodes, “The Future is Faster Than You Think.”

Global gigabit connectivity will connect everyone and everything, everywhere, at ultra-low-cost: The deployment of both licensed and unlicensed 5G, plus the launch of a multitude of global satellite networks (OneWeb, Starlink, etc.), allow for ubiquitous, low-cost communications for everyone, everywhere–– not to mention the connection of trillions of devices. Today’s skyrocketing connectivity is bringing online an additional 3 billion individuals, driving tens of trillions of dollars into the global economy. Global gigabit technology is driven by the convergence of: low-cost space launches, hardware advancements, 5G networks, artificial intelligence, materials science, and surging computing power. We’re about to connect 8 billion people on the planet, everywhere, all the time, at near-zero cost. This is a future of gigabit connection speeds at the top of Mt. Everest or in the Gobi desert. Currently, the fastest standard wired internet for most homes is 1-GB speed, which will soon jump to 10-GB over the next few years. 10-GB is the broadband technology platform of the future that will deliver residential internet speeds of 10 gigabits per second – 10 times faster than today’s networks. With the power and capacity to change the way we live, learn, work and play, the 10-GB platform will enable creators and innovators to fulfill their dreams while providing the reliability and security that consumers can trust. Imagine downloading a feature-length movie in less time than it takes to read this sentence.

In the decade ahead, the convergence of 5G, satellite constellations, and stratospheric balloons will take us into warp drive, birthing a new age of hyperconnectivity. This technology is under deployment today, and what will be possible tomorrow.

The Missing MoneyAndy and Sally, an elderly couple, were celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had recently moved back to their old neighborhood after they retired.

Holding hands, as they always did, they walked back to their old grade school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they’d shared, where Andy had carved “I love you, Sally.” It was such a cherished memory as those days came rushing back to both of them. They were truly blessed.

On their way back home, they took some side roads they used to walk along when they were young. Suddenly, an armored truck went speeding by, and a bag of money popped out of the back door, which was not securely fastened, and fell on the road practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up, but not sure what to do with it; they took it home. There, she counted the money and found out that it contained fifty-thousand dollars in new $20.00 bills!

Andy was beside himself, as he had never seen so much money at one time. He exclaimed, “We’ve got to give it back.”

Sally wasn’t so sure as she said, “Finders keepers – losers weepers, besides that, we don’t even know the name of the company whose truck it fell from.” Sally put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic.

The next day, two FBI agents were canvassing house to house in the neighborhood looking for the money. They came up to Sally and Andy’s home and knocked on the door. “Pardon me, but did either of you find a bag of money that fell out of an armored truck yesterday?”Sally said, “No, we don’t know anything about it.”

Andy could not keep quiet and said, “She’s lying. She hid it up in the attic.”

Sally said, “Oh, officers, don’t believe him; poor Andy is getting senile.”

The agents turned to Andy and began to question him.

The lead agent says: “Tell us the story from the beginning.”

Andy said, “Well, you see officer, it all started when Sally and I were walking home from grade school hand in hand just yesterday...”

The other FBI agent turns to her partner and says, “We’re outta here.”

Mastering The Bible – Intolerant Apostles and Cryptic RevelationsInsight Seventy-Five: The Apostles Didn’t Tolerate Aberrant Teaching about the GospelBoth testaments of the Bible bear witness to the problem of competing religious ideas that were contrary to biblical faith and theology. In the Old Testament period, the polytheistic religious systems of the surrounding nations were a persistent threat to Israel’s exclusive loyalty to Yahweh as the true God. That loyalty was the core of Israel’s faith and the basis for salvation in the Old Testament. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+6%3A4andversion=NLT (Deuteronomy 6:4) Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.

In the New Testament period, idolatry and the danger of worshipping a lesser god was still a target of apostolic teaching and writing. Paul admonished the Corinthians to be careful about eating meat sacrificed to idols, warning them that, in doing so, they were at risk of committing idolatry and fellowshipping with demons (1 Corinthians 10:14-22). Since Paul elsewhere permits eating such meat (1 Corinthians 8:4, 7-9), advising believers not to make a fuss about offerings that were sold in the marketplace (1 Corinthians 10:25), the issue for Paul must have been avoiding any sort of activity that either was participation in the ritual or could be construed that way.

The more significant problem of false teaching, however, seems to involve teachers that professed to follow Jesus but whose teachings altered the simplicity of the Gospel— that salvation was only by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) and was available to Jews and gentiles alike.Paul and the other apostles repeatedly had to deal with “Judaizers,” who argued that gentiles had to conform to specific points of the Mosaic law to be in right standing before God. Paul referred to those who taught such things as “the circumcision party” and famously confronted Peter for his failure to oppose their teaching (Galatians 2:11-14). Peter knew better but was afraid to speak against Judaizing at Antioch. Paul referred to his behavior as “hypocrisy” that was “out of step with the gospel” (Galatians 2:13-14). The Judaizing seems to have been focused on circumcision (and therefore Jewish identity) since Paul later accuses the Judaizers themselves of being lawbreakers (Galatians 6:13). The point is that they had focused on outward conformity to Jewish identity and not the heart. They presumed that being Jewish meant superior status with God.

God is to permeate our head through our understanding of Him. God is in what we gaze upon. God is to be in our speech; that is every word that proceeds from our mouths. God is to be in our hearts, which controls how we think. God is to part of every aspect of our life as we both begin and end each day. Ask yourself, has God infiltrated all of my life?

Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you, too, will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.

Today’s world seems to be so unsettled. The vocal minority desire to do destroy, do away or ignore the past. Most of us do seek justice in our own lives and the lives of others. We seek peace and unity in the future. Today let us meditate on:

Unity During Social UnrestThe apostle Paul spoke the truth about God, the Father, Son, and Spirit. Paul wrote about God’s desire for a new covenant people where we are all equal and united in God. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+3%3A26-28andversion=NLT (Galatians 3:26-28): For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. Significant prejudice is undoubtedly not a new issue. It has been with humanity since the beginning of creation. Let’s look back in the first century, shortly after the time of Christ. Almost everyone in the earliest days of the church was Jewish. Prejudice was a significant problem. Sometimes that prejudice manifested itself toward non-Jews who were coming to Christ and being added to the church, which was the dominant problem addressed in Acts chapters 10-15. However, prejudice was also an issue between sub-groups within the Jewish community. Grecian Jews who were in Jerusalem, and who had become disciples of Christ, made an accusation of discrimination. Their widows who did not speak the native language in Jerusalem were being overlooked and were going hungry while the native-speaking widows were receiving better care and more ample provision as the early Christians shared their possessions. Rather than denying the accusation of prejudice or ignoring this charge of discrimination, The apostles acted very wisely. Notice what they did:

Openness

The apostles brought all the community of disciples together to discuss this issue — no secret meetings and no sweeping the problem under the rug!

Calling

The apostles pointed out that their primary calling was to proclaim the message they had received from God.

Involvement

The apostles called on the church family to be involved in the solution to this problem — more than just being open with the communication, the apostles were asking for help in selecting men to find a solution.

Direction

The apostles gave clear criteria for selecting those who would be part of the ministry team to the Grecian widows and asked the whole congregation to put forward leaders who fit this description.

Last month, we addressed a question that is too broad to answer in one episode. The answer today is the sixth and in a series on our ‘Ask Gramps’ episodes of how Covid-19 is impacting the long term economic effects in the United States. “Hey, Gramps, I realize that after this whole Covid-19 pandemic is under control, life will take on some sort of normalcy for most people. I can’t get my mind around how life will change with so many people out of work and many businesses not being able to survive. What is your take on how life will be after Covid-19?

Life After Covid-19 Part 6Our analysis so far has been overall Jobs in Manufacturing, Brick-and-Mortar Retail, Restaurant Industry/Future Dining, Commercial Real Estate/Offices, and Education. As I mentioned in the past five weeks, I do not have a crystal ball nor a prophetic message about life after Covid-19. That being said, I do have over 40 years of business and nearly 64 years of life experience, which helps me to see what others may not.

The core of the content today comes from a book and companion blog written by Peter Diamandis. His book, ‘The Future is Faster Than You Think,’ was published in January of this year before Covid-19. Peter has recently also stated that Covid-19 would accelerate his predictions significantly. I recommend his book.

Let me once again offer some perspective. It has been said that crises don’t so much alter the course of history as accelerate changes that are already underway. Exponential technology has been disrupting traditional industries at an ever-increasing pace. The pandemic has put these changes into hyperspeed. Never have we had the opportunity to rewrite entire sectors, redefine the problems they address, and reinvent their solutions. This is a scary and also exciting time to be alive! Any time we have a disaster such as this, there is also unlimited opportunity.

Today’s episode will be considerably longer as we capstone this analysis with 20 MetaTrends for the roaring 20s. Many of these predictions will come towards the end of this decade, but we are trending there even today. The Covid19 pandemic will be a catalyst to speed up these trends.
