Reflect… So, without further ado, let’s delve into the wisdom of Proverbs. Verses 22-23: “Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart. Smooth words may hide a wicked heart, just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.” These verses depict the insidious nature of gossip and the deceptive facade of smooth words concealing wicked intentions. How can we understand the destructive power of gossip and the importance of guarding our words? Recognize the power of your words to either build up or tear down others, and choose to use them wisely. Avoid engaging in gossip or spreading rumors, knowing that they have the power to cause harm and destruction. Instead, cultivate a heart that is characterized by honesty and integrity, speaking words of truth and encouragement. Be mindful of the impact your words can have on others, and choose to use them to uplift and edify rather than to tear down. Additionally, be discerning in your interactions with others, avoiding those who engage in gossip or deceitful speech, and instead, seek out those who speak words of truth and kindness. Reflect… Now, let’s explore verses 24-26. “While their hatred may be concealed by trickery, their wrongdoing will be exposed in public. How can we understand the consequences of deceitful intentions and the importance of acting with integrity? Be mindful of the impact your actions can have on others, and choose to treat them with respect and dignity. • Day 2321– Philippians-4 Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Welcome to Day 2321 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Philippians-4 Between a Rock and a Hard Place – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 11/26/2023 Joy in Living – Between a Rock and a Hard Place Last week, we continued this month of Joy in Living as we dug into the letter of Philippians in a message titled What a Way to Live. We discovered that the secret to living well is the same as the secret to having joy: the centrality of Jesus Christ. Keeping Him as our top priority in life will give us great joy.   Today is our last message in the section of Philippians called Joy in Living, and it will focus on Dealing with Dilemmas as we see how Paul found himself “Between a Rock and a Hard Place.”   We are backing up to include one verse from last week to set the tone for today. Let’s read Philippians 1:20-30, on page 1826 in your Pew Bibles. 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. Live as Citizens of Heaven 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,[e] striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.   Have you ever waffled between two different—and reasonable—opinions, unable to decide which one to hold? Or have you thrown your hands up in frustration because you couldn’t land on a conclusive decision between two equally favorable options? Or have you driven your friends and family mad, seeking their advice about which course of action to take? Or wrung your hands over a decision, worried that you were about to make the wrong one? (funny story window/isle & regular/decaf).   For most of you, welcome to the club of difficulty when facing decisions or dilemmas. To one extent or another, we’ve all been there. And by “all,” I mean...

Reflect… So, let’s embark on our exploration of Proverbs. Verses 15-16: “Laziness lets the roof leak, and soon the rafters begin to rot. Eating too much honey makes you sick, so a person who tries to flatter you to gain your favor will be cut off.” These verses illustrate the consequences of laziness and deceit, likening them to a leaking roof and the consequences of consuming too much honey. How can we understand the folly of laziness and deceit and the importance of discernment in our interactions? Recognize the folly of laziness and deceit and avoid engaging in such behaviors. • Day 2319 – Philippians-3 What a Way To Live!
Welcome to Day 2319 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Philippians-3 What a Way To Live! – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 11/19/2023 Joy in Living – What A Way To Live! Last week, we began walking through Philippians as we delved into Joy in Living, specifically, how we can be Confident Enough to be joyful for this Thanksgiving season and all year.   This week, we will continue this month of Joy in Living as we dig into the letter in a message titled What a Way to Live. Let’s read Philippians 1:12-20, on page 1826 in your Pew Bibles. 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[b] that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[c] and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[d] 20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.   Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl observed, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”   If we pursue happiness instead of choosing joy, we’ll become, as Frankl put it, “plaything[s] of circumstance.” Our inner peace will be tossed back and forth according to the whim of events beyond our control. But if we choose our attitude—the one essential freedom that can’t be taken away from us—we can choose joy even amid the cruelest circumstances.   I am convinced that joy does not come from without, but from within. A life of calm, peaceful satisfaction, a positive...

Reflect… So, let’s embark on our exploration of Proverbs. Verses 1-3: “Honor is no more associated with fools than snow with summer or rain with harvest. Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim. Guide a horse with a whip, a donkey with a bridle, and a fool with a rod to his back!” These verses paint vivid pictures of the paradox of honor with fools, the futility of undeserved curses, and the necessity of discipline for the foolish. • Day 2316 – Philippians-2 Confident Enough to be Joyful
Welcome to Day 2315 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Philippians-2 Confident Enough to be Joyful – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 11/12/2023 Joy in Living – Confident Enough to be Joyful   Last week, we began a new series in the letter to the Church in Philippi, where our focus for this month will be Joy in Living for this Thanksgiving season. We explored some insights and background into this letter,   This week, we will begin walking through Philippians as we delve into Joy in Living, specifically, how we can be Confident Enough to be Joyful.   Let’s read Philippians 1:1-11, on page 1825 in your Pew Bibles. 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons[a]: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Thanksgiving and Prayer 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.   Ours is a frivolous age with lots of shallow, empty laughter … like the laugh tracks on a sitcom… but very little absolute joy.   Most people stumble around in perpetual confusion—darkness, really. As they seek genuine joy, they satisfy themselves with only occasional glimpses of light—artificial light. Occasionally, it’s sad to say, that some of the light they’re attracted to is a consuming fire. It destroys their lives rather than illuminating their minds or warming their hearts.   Paul would have understood this plight as he, too, groped around in darkness until that glorious day when the light of the gospel of Christ shone brightly into his life (Acts 9:1–19). Although he often experienced suffering from that day, he rarely let the darkening fog of discouragement cloud his mind or drive out the light of joy.   His letter to the Philippians, embossed with unfading joy on every page, proves

  • Day 2314 – Philippians-1 Insights into Philippians
Welcome to Day 2314 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Philippians-1  Insights into Philippians – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 11/05/2023 - (10/29 was missions Sunday) Joy in Living - Insights into Philippians   Last week was our Outreach/Mission focus with Jeff & Candy Waite of the Gospel Mission Food Pantry. Partnering with others worldwide to build God’s kingdom is a blessing. This week, we begin a new series in the letter to the Church in Philippi, where our focus for this month will be Joy in Living for this Thanksgiving season. Today, we will explore some insights into this letter, and next week, we will begin walking through Philippians.   As an introduction today, let’s read Philippians 1:1-2, on page 1825 in your Pew Bibles. 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons[a]: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. As we sang the song ‘I’ve Got The Joy’ along with our children’s message today, it makes you wonder why some church gatherings seem to have lost their joy. There certainly are exceptions where there are joyful believers and rejoicing congregations. I’m thankful I’ve have the privilege to serve in such a congregation here at Putnam. But sadly, truly joyful Christians are a rare species in some congregations. To be clear, when I say “joyful Christians,” I’m not talking about silly or foolish Christians. I’m not talking about Christians who think everything’s a joke. And I’m certainly not talking about sarcastic, cynical, or sneering Christians. I’m searching for genuinely joyful Christians—the kind of joy that looks more like contentment and peace than excitement or happiness. This type of joy is what the letter to the Philippians is about. It is the joy mentioned during our children’s video this morning in Psalm 16:11. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.   Let's ask ourselves a few questions if we think it does not apply to us. Are we together, and each of us individually, part of the joyful remnants? Or have we forgotten how good it is to smile? Have our burdens caused our shoulders to sag and our backs to slouch? When was the last time we really let the joy of the Lord change our countenance?  If we’re like most people, we could probably use a healthy dose of real joy. Thankfully, that’s the theme of the book of Philippians. Paul’s letter is saturated with joy from the first word to the last. Talk about a message desperately needed today! In our world of downers and disappointments, setbacks and failures, tragedies and disasters, how easy it is to let despair take over.   I can’t think of anything that reveals the person and work of Jesus Christ in the lives of believers more than the manifestation of joy. The Christian’s most obvious advertisement is that they have something that can make a real difference in a world scraping for just an ounce of
