What does it really take to build a brand people care about?
On this episode of the #WisdomOfWomen Show, I sit down with Shauna Lahiri, President and Partner of No Makeup Makeup and a beauty industry leader with nearly 30 years of experience building and scaling brands.
Shauna shares hard-earned lessons about taking risks, leading with empathy, earning trust, knowing when to walk away, and why great brands begin by understanding the customer—not by talking about themselves.
We also unpack how No Makeup Makeup grew into an eight-figure business in under two years by staying relentlessly focused on making the customer’s life better.
A conversation for every founder building a brand, leading a team, or trying to create something people genuinely value.
Our Guest this Week:
Shauna Lahiri is a transformative beauty brand builder with more than twenty years of experience turning bold ideas into billion-dollar-caliber brands, having driven Guthy-Renker's international division to $450 million in under six years while stewarding icons like Proactiv®, WEN®, and Meaningful Beauty®. Today she is President and Partner of No Makeup Makeup®, where alongside beauty pioneer Victoria Jackson and longtime partner Kim Wileman she has scaled a groundbreaking, multi-award-winning brand from inception to market leadership in under two years — and earned the distinction of the first fragrance ever named to Oprah's Favorite Things.
As founder of Ignition Beauty, she has advised everyone from scrappy startups to the best-known personal care brands in the world on brand strategy, launch, and exponential growth across DTC, e-commerce, and direct-selling channels. What makes Shauna a must-listen for visionary founders is not just her mastery of omni-channel scale, but her conviction that trust-based, exceptional cultures are the true engine of innovation and lasting market leadership.
Chapters:
Takeaways:
1. Start with the customer, not the product.
Shauna’s strongest business lesson is that even a great product, celebrity founder, or impressive campaign cannot replace solving something the customer genuinely cares about.
2. Trust is something you demonstrate.
Policies and values statements mean very little if people experience something different when life gets difficult. Shauna now looks for integrity through behavior.
3. Empathy does not lower the standard for excellence.
Giving someone space to deal with a difficult moment can actually allow them to continue doing excellent work. Shauna sees humanity and performance as connected, not competing priorities.
4. You sometimes have to leave what looks successful from the outside.
Shauna walked away from a prestigious senior role because the culture no longer aligned with her values, even though the decision initially felt frightening rather than liberating.
5. Growth comes from removing friction.
No Makeup Makeup has focused on making beauty easier for its customer—from shade matching to application to understanding exactly how the product fits into her real life.

What happens when one chapter ends and life asks you to begin again?
On this episode of the #WisdomOfWomen Show, I sit down with Emmy Award-winning producer and director Deborah Read, whose career has included *The Bachelor*, *The Golden Bachelor*, the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys.
Deborah shares what more than two decades of storytelling and leadership have taught her about reinvention, building strong teams, staying open to opportunity, and creating stories people can actually see themselves in.
She also opens up about becoming a first-time mother at 53, leaving a role she had held for nearly 12 years, and stepping boldly into her next chapter.
A conversation about creativity, courage, second acts, and why you are never too far along to begin again.
Chapters:
Takeaways:
1. Reinvention does not have an expiration date.
Deborah’s story is a reminder that one chapter ending can make space for another. She left a long-running role, became a first-time mother at 53, and stepped into a new creative season at the same time.
2. The best stories make people see themselves in them.
Whether you are creating television or building a business, Deborah believes the audience has to connect with the core human need underneath the story. That is what makes people care.
3. Preparation gives you the freedom to pivot.
Deborah’s years in live television taught her to prepare deeply so that when something unexpected happens, the team can respond instead of panic.
4. People do their best work when they feel like they matter.
One of Deborah’s strongest leadership lessons is making the team feel part of the story, not simply another person completing a task. Feeling valued creates stronger connection and buy-in.
5. Stay open to what you did not plan for.
Deborah’s career has been shaped by pivots, unexpected opportunities, and saying yes. Her advice is simple: judgment can close a door too early, so stay open long enough to see what might happen.

Today's discussion centers around the transformative impact of corporate wellness, particularly through the lens of Jessa Messina, founder and CEO of YoJo.
Jessa's journey into wellness began with her experiences overcoming personal challenges, including a traumatic accident and health struggles, which fueled her passion for creating accessible and trauma-informed wellness solutions.
At YoJo, she has successfully integrated wellness programs into organizations like NBC and Urban Outfitters, emphasizing the importance of fostering a safe and inclusive work culture.
Our conversation delves into the necessity of meeting employees where they are, the dangers of toxic positivity, and how genuine healing requires acknowledging both struggles and triumphs. As we explore the intersection of personal experience and professional innovation, we aim to illuminate how wellness can be a powerful catalyst for change in corporate America.
Our Guest this Week:
Jessa Messina is the Founder & CEO of YoJo, a corporate wellness company that has brought trauma-informed, accessible wellness to teams at NBC, TIME Magazine, Urban Outfitters, and Grubhub.
Her path began in 2006 teaching yoga to FSU students and the university’s football team, and by 2011 she’d earned Trainer of the Year at Tribeca Equinox, where she pioneered yoga programs for men who never imagined a studio was for them—and later partnered with the landmark Stonewall Inn to create space for the LGBTQ community. Drawing on more than 10,000 combined hours of teaching and training, plus three years in tech sales that sharpened her understanding of the corporate grind, Jessa built YoJo into a comprehensive platform of live workshops, ergonomic programming, and on-demand classes designed to reduce burnout and improve retention.
Having healed from both an autoimmune disease and major head trauma, she leads with hard-won compassion, building wellness that meets people exactly where they are—intersectional, accessible, and deeply human.

Our Guest this Week:

Meghann Conter, the esteemed founder of The Dames, articulates her vision of transforming the entrepreneurial landscape for women by providing a unique accelerator designed specifically for them.
She elucidates the challenges that women face, including the dearth of representation in high-revenue business sectors and the pervasive hustle culture that often leads to burnout.
Through The Dames, Meghann aims to break these outdated norms, enabling women to redefine success not merely in terms of financial gain but also through impact, joy, and meaningful leadership.
Our conversation delves into the transformative power of collaboration, personal growth, and the necessity of nurturing authentic connections among women in business.
