Witchpolice Radio

As I do every year, I've made a list of my favourite local albums of 2024. Did I miss albums? Absolutely. Did I immediately question my judgement after I finished narrowing it down to 20? Yuppers. But for good or ill, there are 20 releases by local artists I want to highlight.

Continuing the tradition I began a couple years ago, I've recorded a series of episodes counting down the records on my list, including interview clips and songs.

This fourth and final installment covers my top five albums in my unscientifically ranked list, which includes 'We Were Born Here, What's Your Excuse?' by The Secret Beach (episode #911), 'The Unsuspected and Unstoppable' by Fuller Hull (episode #932), 'Nassau Manor' by Epic and Rob Crooks (episode #916), 'I Can Be Two People At Once' by Touching (episode #894), and 'Until the Sun Comes' by Tetyana Haraschuk (episode #926).

This third installment covers albums I've unscientifically ranked from 10-6 (I know, random numbering happening here, sorry) which includes 'Paul Is Dead' by Paul Hodgert (episode #920), 'Saints Go To Church, Sinners Go To Jail' by Greg Rekus (episode #930), 'Winter of Wiggle (and Summer of Stiff) by Stiff Wiggle (episode #793 from last year), 'Solid Gold' by Diaphanie (episode #935), and the self-titled album by Compost (episode #884).

...so I had this great idea to occasionally record live sessions by local artists (at my house) and release them as music-only episodes of the podcast.

Singer/songwriter/Jawbreaker fan/tall person Paul Hodgert volunteered to be the guinea pig, but with a twist -- he had access to all kinds of fancy video equipment, so we turned the recording into a livestream that aired Dec. 19 on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

This episode is strictly the audio from the show, with a bunch of dead air and whatnot cut out. Half an hour or so of wall-to-wall music. Hoping to do more of these in future, so stay tuned for that at some point... and also stayed tuned for my annual list of favourite local albums of the year, which will come out over a series of episodes beginning this week.

Note: Paul's 'Paul Is Dead' tape is on that list. Not revealing the placement, though.

When Mike "Iron Buddha" Zastre was last on an episode of the podcast, we hadn’t really figured out the show’s format, and he was mainly working on weird electronic music.

Skip ahead a decade-plus, and he’s now fully jumped into the world of comics and zines, launching the debut issue of the sci-fi/horror-themed 'Heat_Death' at this year’s Prairie Comics Festival. He'll also be at the PCF's zine fair happening RIGHT NOW if you're reading this day-of.

Tune in for a chat about zine culture, mushroom metaverses, DIY publishing, and much more!
