On April 2, 2020, the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development hosted a Town Hall on The Impact of COVID-19 on Small Diverse Businesses. They surveyed hundreds of small diverse businesses, analyzed results, delivered a call to action, and discussed “Where Are The Resources and What’s Next?” Guest speakers include:

Raquel Binder received her academic training, PhD in Microbiology and Immunology and MPH in Epidemiology, both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of California, Berkeley. Raquel serves as a Senior Research Associate with the Duke One Health Team. She sat down with Kimberley Pierce Cartwright on Conversations to talk about COVID-19 so that the lay community could get a better understanding of the disease.

Phyllis Coley is CEO/Publisher of Spectacular Magazine and Host of Spectacular Magazine Radio Show. With a B.A. in English from NCCU, the Durham, NC native began her professional career as Promotions/Marketing Director for NYC’s WKTU-FM. She took her training and a love of marketing to develop a magazine that celebrates the African American experience. During a special Conversations she speaks with Kimberley Pierce Cartwright about her love for community and building her business.

Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton is Associate Professor of Mass Communications at NCCU, She is the youngest daughter of civil rights attorney Floyd Mckissick Sr. and Evelyn McKissick. She is the author of the book Love Letters to Magnolia: Correspondence from Ernest, a Black WWI Soldier. Love Letters to Magnolia tells the story of an African American soldier fighting during WWI through letters addressed to his sweetheart back home. She joins Kimberley Pierce Cartwright on Conversations to talk about her work.

NCCU archivist Andre Vann has great knowledge of African-American history. He is a scholar with quick wit and a sharp mind who knows about North Carolina Central University’s great women. Andre shares his stories with Kimberley Pierce Cartwright on Conversations. He teaches undergraduates about public history, and has written three books on the state’s African-American communities.
