August 22, 2024On The Record with WNXP: GustafGustaf are a post-punk band from Brooklyn, a description that fits what seems like hundreds of bands during this current “post-punk revival.” But few stand out like Gustaf. Yes, their music embodies the familiar sounds of the genre — agitated guitars, dynamic bass lines and talk-singing preaching — but their latest record Package Pt. 2 is also experimental, unexpected and often uncomfortable. It’s obvious the five-piece is willing and able to push their sonic boundaries beyond the simplicity of punk. Their instrumental layering and the vocal stylings of maniacal frontwoman Lydia Gammill are commanding in ways that make the band incomparable to their peers.Watch Gustaf perform “Starting and Staring,” “Close” and “Ground” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here....more14minPlay

August 20, 2024On The Record with WNXP: RatboysBootgaze, freak folk, whatever you want to call it, it’s no secret country-leaning indie rock is having a major moment. So much so, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to stand out in the ever-growing popular “genre.” Chicago’s Ratboys met that challenge with their most transformative record yet. Recruiting acclaimed indie rock producer Chris Walla, The Window combines the perfect amount of twang and punchy riffs to create swelling, cinematic moments that the settle into comforting, front porch-sitting familiarity.Watch Ratboys perform “It’s Alive,” “Black Earth, WI” and “Country” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here. ...more11minPlay

August 16, 2024On The Record with WNXP: SquidThey’ve been dubbed post-punk, but that doesn’t quite encompass what Brighton’s Squid is capable of. Drummer and singer Ollie Judge has gone on the record calling the quintet’s sound “some sort of twisted, 21st-century jazz,” pairing rock guitars with classical and jazz instrumentation. It’s chaotic and frenetic, but intentional. Their latest LP O Monolith showcases exactly that. Regardless of its lack of “genre,” everything Squid does is expansive and all-consuming. It’s bigger than the sound they create. It’s a work of art.Watch Squid perform “Fugue (Bin Song),” “Undergrowth” and “Swing (In A Dream)” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral here....more8minPlay
