This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss Silent Book Club with the founder of Nashville’s chapter and the owner of the local bookstore that’s co-hosting. Silent Book Club is happening at various locations throughout the month of September, and on.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds have been a band since 1983 and have gained a cult following around Nick Cave's persona as a sort of Prince of Darkness. But about ten years ago, he encountered real tragedy that changed him and his music completely. Wild God, is The Bad Seed's 18th studio album, it deals with Cave's journey through grief of the past decade and landing on new, long dormant emotions like joy, that the band are experiencing once again. WNXP was granted this rare interview with Nick Cave.

This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss the Nashville Public Library’s Courtyard Concert series taking place near their downtown location at Church Street Park. It’s happening every Tuesday from September 3rd to October 22 with Ed Brown, Public Information Officer for the library.

Nashville band BEAN. has only been together for a few years but has been rising through the Nashville music scene with their blend of bedroom pop and alternative soul. Their connection all started in the dorm rooms of Belmont University the same place where the wrote songs off their debut self-titled EP.

Gustaf are a post-punk band from Brooklyn, a description that fits what seems like hundreds of bands during this current “post-punk revival.” But few stand out like Gustaf. Yes, their music embodies the familiar sounds of the genre — agitated guitars, dynamic bass lines and talk-singing preaching — but their latest record Package Pt. 2 is also experimental, unexpected and often uncomfortable. It’s obvious the five-piece is willing and able to push their sonic boundaries beyond the simplicity of punk. Their instrumental layering and the vocal stylings of maniacal frontwoman Lydia Gammill are commanding in ways that make the band incomparable to their peers.

This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss Live From DRKMTTR Listening Party & Tape Swap happening this Saturday with Billy Campbell, who produced and engineered the record. 

Bootgaze, freak folk, whatever you want to call it, it’s no secret country-leaning indie rock is having a major moment. So much so, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to stand out in the ever-growing popular “genre.” Chicago’s Ratboys met that challenge with their most transformative record yet. Recruiting acclaimed indie rock producer Chris Walla, The Window combines the perfect amount of twang and punchy riffs to create swelling, cinematic moments that the settle into comforting, front porch-sitting familiarity.

More than 20 years into the Iron & Wine project, 2024 finds singer-songwriter Sam Beam having released both a new studio album, 'Light Verse,' and a concert documentary film, 'Who Can See Forever.' Beam stopped by WNXP studios to discuss creative momentum and the importance in taking risks even though life, as he says in the documentary's trailer, has "no safety ropes." The Iron & Wine 'Light Verse' tour stops at Ryman Auditorium on Saturday, August 24.

They’ve been dubbed post-punk, but that doesn’t quite encompass what Brighton’s Squid is capable of. Drummer and singer Ollie Judge has gone on the record calling the quintet’s sound “some sort of twisted, 21st-century jazz,” pairing rock guitars with classical and jazz instrumentation. It’s chaotic and frenetic, but intentional. Their latest LP O Monolith showcases exactly that. Regardless of its lack of “genre,” everything Squid does is expansive and all-consuming. It’s bigger than the sound they create. It’s a work of art.
