Many who grew up under the influence of abstinence teaching remember well the book, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” by Joshua Harris. In a world where Harris has renounced the book and his faith, many have started to question the validity of abstinence teaching, and its hand in perpetuating shame culture. The Woman Beings dive into the topic of abstinence and the way the Church has implemented it. From consent to education to whether it’s even worth it to wait until marriage.

In this week's episode, the Woman Beings talk about the critically acclaimed yet highly controversial film, Cuties or Mignonnes. Netflix and the director, Maïmouna Doucouré, have received a lot of backlash for this French film featuring 11-year-old girls dancing provocatively. Many have spoken out against the film for exploiting young girls and promoting pornographic imagery of children, birthing the social media campaign, #cancelnetflix. However, the director claims that the film was commentary on the sexualization of young girls, pulled mainly from her own story. The Woman Beings watched the film to find out what all this was about and add our perspective to the conversation.

Woman Being is a community of people who happen to be female. We host conversations in order to gain perspective and promote healing. On our own we only have a part of the story but together we create a whole story, the human story.
This project was birthed out of a close group of friends getting lost in conversation. Maybe we just like hearing ourselves talk, or maybe we found our conversations so deeply enriching that we decided to extend the invitation in the form of a podcast. We hope that as we explore this big, messy world and dive into the gray that you’ll find some gold in the midst of it too.
