  • Ep. 57: Strength to Strength Surviving Terrorism with Sarri Singer

    On June 11, 2003, Sarri was on Bus 14 in Jerusalem when an 18-year-old Palestinian terrorist dressed as a religious Jew boarded and blew himself up. 17 people were killed, including all those seated and standing around her, and over 100 people were injured. Sarri was hospitalized for two weeks and then returned to New Jersey to be with family.

    Her story became high profile. She appeared on television stations such as CBS, Fox News, CNN, and radio interviews. She spoke before Congressmen and Senators in Washington, D.C. and politicians in New York and New Jersey. In September 2003 she returned to work and volunteering in Israel. In June 2004, she returned to the United States to take care of ongoing medical issues associated with her attack.

    Sarri is the Founder and Director of Strength to Strength (stosglobal.org), which focuses on bringing together victims of terrorism together from around the world and assisting with long term psychological needs. Sarri has addressed audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, and Israel and continues to share her unique insight into the ongoing struggle for victims of terror in Israel and around the world.

    Peripartum Depression with the Just One Life Team

    Just One Life/Nefesh Achat B’Yisrael is a nonprofit located in Jerusalem, that provides financial, psychological, and emotional support to women struggling with the peripartum and postpartum period. We seek to empower and support women throughout their pregnancy and motherhood journey, no matter what challenging circumstances they are facing. They have an eclectic team of therapists with different specialities- psychodrama, CBT, psychodynamic therapy, ACT, and Mind/Body connection. We each utilize our unique skill set to help every client face their challenges and experience their pregnancy/ birth in a more positive way.

    Chaya Katzin, LCSW: 

    Chaya currently serves as our Director and Senior Social Worker, managing our team and also is the social work student supervisor in partnership with Bar Ilan University.

    Atara Block, LMSW:

    Atara is a NY State and Israel Licensed Master Social Worker who focuses on women’s health and groupwork. She holds a BA in psychology from Touro College and an MSW from Wurzweiler School of Social Work. At Just One Life, she works as an individual therapist and case worker, as well as content writer and special projects coordinator. 

    Shira Keyak:

    Shira Keyak has a B.A in social work from Bar Ilan University and is currently in the program of M.A at clinical social work at the Hebrew University and part of Shluchey Tzibur program in Mandel leadership program at the Hebrew University.

    Sara Gordon:

    Sara Gordon is a drama therapist at Just One Life. Sara utilizes drama therapy as well as psychodrama techniques in her work. Sara holds a BA in Psychology from Concordia University and an MA in Drama Therapy from New York University. 

    Elianna Rubinstein:

    Elianna holds a B.A in Social Work from Bar Ilan University, and is currently in the Social Work Masters program in Hebrew University, specializing in Trauma. Elianna is a trained Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, who studied in Hadassah Hospital’s CBT program.

  • Ep. 54: Perfect for Pesach with Naomi Nachman

    Naomi Nachman, renowned caterer and cookbook author joins me in a casual conversations about food, Pesach, and how she went from teacher to best selling cookbook author. Get her Perfect Flavors cookbook or Perfect for Pesach cookbook.

    Naomi has provided us with a delicious salmon recipe that is simply put, perfect for Pesach.

    Pistachio Crusted Salmon

    ⅛ᵗʰ cup red horseradish
    ⅛ᵗʰ cup mayonnaise
    1 cup shelled salted pistachios by @yumtee_nuts
    ½ cup brown sugar
    2 Tablespoon lemon juice
    2 pounds salmon fillet (one whole side of a baby salmon)

    Mix the horseradish and mayonnaise together in a small bowl.
    Place the salmon on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    Spread the mixture over the fish and set aside.

    In a food processor crush the nut until they are course ground but not too fine. Add in the brown sugar and lemon juice and mix until it looks like wet sand.

    Pat nut mixture on top of salmon and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

    Prep ahead tip. This can be made in advance and you can freeze it right before cooking. When ready to cook defrost in fridge and bake according to directions above.

Sexual abuse is not discussed often enough, but we know it exists in our community. We know that it exists in every community. I commend Hadassah, who we will refer to by first name only, for speaking about her journey to healing. I thank Hadassah for her bravery and vulnerability, and encourage everyone to check out the show notes, as Hadassah has compiled a list of resources that have helped her in her healing journey. Kiki is trach, vent, and gtube dependent, has a complex medical history, and is developmentally delayed. In addition to her new role, Sara works for NJ NCSY and is a part time OU JLIC educator at Rutgers.
