Some women know from a young age that they want to break the girl mould - that they’re meant to do the very thing society tries to tell them they can’t do. Jane MacLatchy had a dream of becoming a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before women were even allowed to apply for the job, and she now serves among the highest ranks.
Her career has included War Crimes Investigations, Major Events Security including for the Vancouver Olympics and Paralympics, as well as serving as the Director of Parliamentary Protective Service on Parliament Hill. In early 2019, she was named Assistant Commissioner of the Manitoba RCMP and the province’s first female Commanding Officer.
In our conversation, Assistant Commissioner MacLatchy shares how she proved herself in a male-dominated environment and how she rose through the ranks despite a lack of female role-models. We also discuss the repercussions of and steps to repair the boys’ club culture, and why having more women in senior leadership roles is changing policing for the better.
