  • Emotional Brain Training with Dr. Mellin

Wow! I had the chance to speak with Dr. Laurel Mellin, PhD this week on Women Influencers and we had a great discussion about the neuroscience behind joy. Dr. Mellin is a health psychologist who founded and developed emotional brain training. She is an associate clinical professor of family and community medicine and pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Mellin has authored papers on the science and efficacy of EBT and is a New York Times bestselling author of four books on the method.

We discussed how she grew up with both parents and had a normal life until she finished her undergraduate at UC Berkeley in just 3 years, married her childhood sweetheart at 21, and had a baby at 23. Unfortunately, the baby passed away and Dr. Mellin was scarred from surgery as a result and was given the news that she would not be able to have more children. Since her plans on being a mother of 4 children and enjoying married life were interrupted, she went to graduate school in nutrition and after a while decided to invest all her time in trying to cure obesity. 6 months into her new job as a professor at UC San Francisco, she became pregnant. You’ll have to tune in to hear her incredible story!

We discussed Emotional Brain Training (EBT) and how just a few simple steps and encouragement from a group of people can cure things like obesity by allowing you to achieve neural integration - or in layman’s terms: Joy.

“You can make a major shift in your life.” - Dr. Laurel Mellin, PhD

  • Tamika Moses: Robin Bird

This week on Women Influencers, I spoke to Tamika Moses, the CEO & Managing Broker of Robin Bird Realty Inc of Hollywood, FL. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies & Communications from Florida Atlantic University and Master of Science degree in International Real Estate from Florida International University in 2015. Alongside her robust credentials, she is also a licensed Florida Real Estate Instructor and owns the Florida Real Estate School, Robin Bird Real Estate Institute.

We discussed how she grew up with both her parents, shopping around Miami with her mom and having fun enjoying sports with her father. It was her love for sports that made it so her initial intention was to become a sportscaster for ESPN, but after tagging along to sales with her mother who worked in Real Estate, she decided to try her hand as a mortgage loan officer.

After her mother sadly passed away from cancer in 2013, Tamika earned her master’s degree in International Real Estate. When she founded her company, she named it after her mother, Robin.

  • Creating Systems with Ral West

I had the chance to speak with Ral West this week on Women Influencers. She is the founder of Ral West, Livin’ the Dream, a service company dedicated to teaching Entrepreneurs how to create smooth running businesses so they can overcome overwhelm, accomplish more success with less stress, and live the life they deserve.

We discussed how she grew up in a family involved in Alaska Tourism, which earned her father the nickname “Mr. Alaska.” After moving to Anchorage, she opened her first business which was a marketing consulting firm specializing in tourism. After setting up shop in an executive suit, she met the boy across the hall that would eventually become her husband.

After a while they decided to focus on her husband’s business, Hawaiian Vacations, and began chartering wide body jets to carry Alaskans to Hawaii, as the existing air service was a bit variable. They were able to grow the business to the point that it was acquired by Alaska Airlines.

We then discussed her other business ventures and the importance of utilizing systems.

  • Andrea Simon: Anthropology and Business

I had the pleasure of speaking with Andi Simon this week on Women Influencers. Andi is the founder of Simon Associates Management Consultants LLC (SAMC), which she founded in 2002 to apply anthropology’s methods, tools, and theory to businesses in need of change.

We discussed how she was being trained to take over the family retail business when she went off to college at Penn State and discovered Anthropology by chance. After completing her undergraduate work at Columbia, she went right into a doctoral program. She studied how people change, particularly immigrants modifying and adapting their cultures into the cultures of their new countries. Then, while being perfectly content being a professor, she was introduced by her husband Andy to a whole bunch of folks at Citibank who asked her to come on board and help them change.

That kick started her career as a consultant, which has been her focus for 22 years and counting. She has also penned 3 books on the subject! We talked about the challenges of being a woman in business, Andi’s influence and strategies to effect change, and why I started my podcast.

  • Answering the Call with Christy Gessler

In this week’s episode of Women Influencers, I spoke with Christy Gessler, Realtor, Broker/Owner of Freedom 512 real estate group, and former Park Ranger in Travis County, TX. She was the first female deputized Park Ranger in her county’s emergency response team.

We discussed how her father served in the Air Force and then became a business owner, so she grew up with service and business ownership in her blood. After having her two sons, she decided to take time away from the police force to care for them. After that, she found herself inspired by Real Estate.

We discussed the challenges of struggling with sobriety, the importance of helping friends when you notice they’re not doing their best, and the impact of knowing your “why.”

  • Elise Russel: Behave Boldly

In this week’s episode of Women Influencers, I spoke with Elise Russell, founder of the motivational lifestyle brand Pony Friday. She is a quick-witted speaker, copywriter and creative director, known for her award-winning work, bright ideas, attention to detail and sass.

We discussed how she grew up as the middle child in her family of Home Builders in Alberta, Canada. Although pursuing a career in the arts was a different path than most in her town, she had support from her family. She lived with her Grandpa for 2 years while she was in college, which allowed her to afford her college education.

After realizing being a starving artist might not be for her, she switched to business and eventually went to Ad school. Despite having 6 years of post secondary education, Elise doesn’t have a formal degree. It hasn’t been an impediment, though, clearly, as her business has been running for 12 years.

We discussed the challenge of running a branding business through the pandemic when so many small businesses were facing hardships, the influence raising your hand and stepping up has on your community, and the advice we tell ourselves when things aren’t going our way.

  • Amy Calandrino: Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

In this week’s episode of Women Influencers, I spoke with Amy Calandrino, a commercial real estate advisor and the founder & CEO of Beyond Commercial in Orlando, Florida. She also hosts the Performance Mindset podcast, and was gracious enough to have me as a guest.

On Women Influencers, we discussed her family’s winter move from Vermont to Florida with $600, a truck, and a trailer in search of better economic opportunities. She shared how she started her first business at age 13, both worked and went to school full time in her college years, and in 2015 transitioned fully into Commercial Real Estate. Amy’s goal is to help small and medium sized businesses reach their full potential.

A highlight of this episode is when Amy shared that although it seems like she can do anything, no one can do everything. She shared this while sharing a story about 2021, a difficult time in her life.

  • Michelle Fraser: Climbing to the Next Level

In this week’s episode of Women Influencers, I spoke with Michelle Fraser, an engineering expert and consultant in the oil and gas industry, with over 25 years of experience working with global organizations in the UK and overseas. She is also the host of the Energy Sector Heroes podcast.

We discussed how she was encouraged throughout her school years to pursue a career in typical female roles and to avoid male dominated fields. However, Michelle knew what she wanted. She got her first job as a technician and then never looked back. Her source of inspiration was her parents, who taught her how to work hard, be authentic, and set boundaries.

Michelle shared how a big challenge she has had to overcome is believing in herself.  We thought that is probably more common than people care to admit.

Michelle then shared a some great advice:
