This year sees Girton College celebrating 150 years since it’s foundation. In 1948, it was granted full college status by the university, marking the official admittance of women to the University of Cambridge.We find out about the Women behind the names – part of an extraordinary group of Girton College alumnae among an illustrious list of people to have roads in Eddington, Cambridge’s new urban area, named after them. Mistress of Girton College, Susan Smith, spoke to our contributor Phil Mynott at the college’s Swirles Court in Eddington about the legacies of these Cambridge pioneers and how they still continue to affect us.

Madi Vorva has campaigned against the use of unsustainable palm-oil since she was 11 years old. As a teenager, Madi was instrumental in persuading Kellogs to agree to a deforestation-free policy for all its products; she has fronted a TV show, made a documentary in Cambodia. She is a United Nations Forest Hero, was honored at the Teen Choice Awards, and she sits on the board of the Jane Goodall Institute.

Dr Rebecca Lent is the Executive Secretary of the International Whaling Commission which provides for the proper conservation of whale stocks; Rebecca speaks to Women Making Waves contributor Jan Moore about her role in the Commission, and how important it is to make sure that whales are protected so that they don’t become extinct.

(Photo Holly McGlynn) Cassa Pancho MBE is the founder and Artistic Director of Ballet Black, a professional ballet company. Cassa saw a real lack of black dancers and this ignited the creation of Ballet Black in 2001. Cassa’s goal is ultimately to see a change in the number of black and asian dancers in mainstream ballet companies.

There can be few people in the UK who have not heard of the Pankhurst family and their part in fighting for women’s suffrage. Leading women’s rights campaigner Dr Helen Pankhurst told Linda Ness and Suzie Thorpe about her passion for keeping the family name alive and her thoughts on the state of women’s rights today. This piece includes a song by Flaming June called The Women’s Battalion, written by Louise Eatock for the centenary of women’s suffrage.
