Happy New Year!! 

I'm a big believer in setting your new year up for success with affirmations and intentions and I wanted to bring that energy to you!

Shannon and I sat down to talk about the spaces we "don't belong in" or are the only people like ourselves in those spaces.

Shannon is a black + plus-size aerial artist who had the confidence to try something new and the ability to fall in love with aerial arts despite the gyms, the silks, the lyras often being occupied by a very specific body type. Looking around her studio and seeing no people of color and only the typical slim, lean body types and rather than be swayed away, she decided to keep training.

She advocates for people of color and all body types to engage the arts and promotes the idea of loving your body, always, for what it can do without the assumption that your body can't do things if it doesn't look like "that.”

I sat down with Michanne Bohanon to discuss how black families can gain financial literacy and, as a result, start developing generational wealth that has been denied to us for way too many generations! Michanne brings a dynamic perspective to financial planning and wants to make sure black women and their families have confidence in their financial future.

Being confident isn’t just about being a confident woman. It’s about having confidence in all aspects of your life including your bank account. I believe it’s so important to have black female representation in the financial industry for those of us who want to be financially independent and free women.

I was unable to sit down with my cousin as planned but I still wanted to come on and address a topic we had planned to talk about - black girls being bullied at school. 

As a black woman who grew up being endlessly teased for my black features, it broke my heart to hear my young cousin is experiencing the same thing. Teasing a classmate because of their skin tone or the texture of their hair is racism. Parents don't want to acknowledge that racial bullying is racism against our youth. And while you may not want to admit your child would do that, racial bullying is steady happening to black girls in every city and state in the USA. How can we stop it?

Melissa is the owner of Moss North Therapy and has a focus in massage therapy. She was raised in a biracial household that encouraged a holistic lifestyle. She believes in the bigger picture of an individuals ability to heal themselves and that healing comes in many different avenues.

Crystal is a social worker, and just this year, was crowned a beauty pageant queen! We are going to take a walk through the different spaces Crystal has experienced, from grad school, to the pageant stage, to her current field of social work, and discuss how important it is to maintain a positive self-image when you may be the only black women in those spaces.

Our country has more biracial people in it than ever before so this topic is important for adults still struggling with racial identities, as well as making sure we're understanding the potential struggle our biracial children may experience.

Courtney works in an oncology lab and is currently in grad school studying Global Community and Behavioral Health. So rad! 👩🏾‍🎓🙌🏾  

We will discuss the health disparities in urban communities - the lack of access, negative health imagery, and the unproductive communication between black patients and their health care providers.  The focus of our conversation will be around getting more representation of healthy black people out into the world, including to our children.

Alexis is the marketing director at the Aurora Town Center as well as a commissioner with the Cultural and Scientific Commission for the town of Parker in Colorado. Her passion is focused on bringing people of all races and cultures together, especially through art, and we'll be talking about her goals to prioritize bringing cultural art to communities that may be lacking in diversity.
