Women of Substance with Dr. Scarlett Horton⁣
Episode 14 - Dr. Scarlett Horton interviews Pastor Valerie Russell
    __________⁣
Pastor Valerie J. Russell is a passionate, servant-leader with a deep commitment to reach the lost and help people, especially children. In 1990, Valerie established a children’s ministry called, “Church in The Hood,” which was located in the heart of a challenged community. What started out as simply a gathering of children to talk to them about Jesus became a weekly service in the community center. Through this outreach, many were saved and healed, and several are serving God today in ministry.
Valerie's passion for children is further seen in her commitment to keeping children safe as the Executive Director of The MAN Network. This organization ensures that students travel to and from school safely by providing mobile patrols and community clean ups.
In addition to her community responsibilities, Valerie serves as Senior Pastor of New Covenant of Peace World Impact Ministries (a.k.a. The Tabernacle) along with her husband Bishop Tony Russell. Located in Detroit, Michigan, The Tabernacle serves as a place where God is made known, unconditional love is experienced, community needs are met, and weary souls find rest.
In this inspiring episode, Scarlett and Valerie talk about the importance of impacting our communities with the love and hope we have received in Jesus. Your faith will be ignited as you watch.⁣

  • EP 13 - Guest: Dr. Mary Edwards-Williams || WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE with DR. SCARLETT HORTON
Women of Substance with Dr. Scarlett Horton⁣
Episode 13 - Dr. Scarlett Horton interviews Dr. Mary Edwards-Williams
    __________⁣
Dr. Mary Edwards-Williams is an Author, Editor, Book Coach, Conference Speaker, Personal Consultant, and Legacy Coach. She is the co-founder of Joy of Jesus Ministries in Detroit, and CEO of Leaves of Gold Consulting, LLC. She is also the founder of Widows with Wisdom, The Called and Ready Writers, His Lovely Wife Ministries, and M.E.D.I.C. Ministries.
Dr. Mary wrote her autobiography, "Born Grown," in 2007. She shares with the reader how, at the age of 13, she became a mother the same day she lost her virginity. The school was horrified. Mary was an honor roll student when this happened. The school predicted that now she would become just another negative welfare statistic. But God had a different plan.
At the age of 33, Dr. Mary accepted Jesus Christ into her life. He changed man’s doomsday prophecy for her into His divine destiny. If you ask her how she defied the odds, she will tell you that the day she heard the indictment against her she said within herself, “No. I’m better than that.” At that point, she began to write the script for her life, not the way it was, but the way she wanted it to be.
Dr. Mary has received recognition from her city, county, governor, and even the President of The United States for her community work, including that of establishing programs to get mothers off the welfare rolls.
In this motivating episode, Scarlett and Mary talk about the importance of living a life that leaves a legacy. Your faith will be provoked and inspired as you watch.⁣

  • EP 12 - Guest: Louise "Desert Angel" Blain || WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE with DR. SCARLETT HORTON
Women of Substance with Dr. Scarlett Horton⁣
Episode 12 - Dr. Scarlett Horton and Dr. David Horton interview Louise "Desert Angel" Blain
    __________⁣
Louise Downs Blain is the founder Desert Angels, Inc., a non-profit organization that sends care-packages to our military. Desert Angels, Inc., is a faith ministry, a strictly volunteer organization, funded totally by donations.
The ministry began in October 2001, when Louise's friend had a son serving in the US Air Force was deployed in the very primitive conditions of the very HOT desert. Louise gathered some young adults from her church to make boxes and write letters for her friend's son. Her heart was not not only to minister to the troops, but also provide an opportunity for anyone who desires to help a way to show compassion through donating time or items, to prepare these special boxes for our military. Louise continued to host regular "Packing Parties" every month.
Twenty years later, Desert Angels, Inc., has sent tens of thousands of these boxes overseas. They contain a variety of items, including socks, pocket foods, letters from home and "a whole lot of love." Each box also includes a "Prayer Cloth," "Pocket Flag," reminding our Troops, we are praying for them. She believes when we do this, we show our Troops they are not forgotten by our deeds, not just our words.
Changing our world, one box at a time ~ Making a difference!
The care packages that are sent are called "Miracle Boxes" in honor of PFC Joseph A. Miracle, a Michigan Soldier who gave his life defending his unit.
The Troops gave Louise the name "Desert Angel": out of the desert comes a box from someone they don't even know... it much be an angel ~ it must be "The Desert Angel"
In this inspiring episode, Scarlett, David and Louise talk about the value of honoring our military, the importance of patriotism, and the impact we can all have to make a difference in the world. Your faith will be encouraged and ignited as you watch.⁣
