This episode begins with some women-on-the-street interviews asking two questions:

1- When you graduated from high school, what was it like? What did you expect your life would look like?
2. Did things turn out the way you expected?

Jazmin Geografo left the city of Manilla, Philippines (population 21 million)  to try her hand at teaching science in the United States, specifically, the small town of Knappa, Oregon, (population 1800)

 Originally, she sought to become a journalist major, but plans changed when she wasn't admitted to her preferred school. 

Listen in to her passion for teaching and cultural changes she's adjusted to. 

And her fun final activity for her students- making ice cream!

Lilly Lee loves gardening. 

She took time off after receiving her degree in Electrical Engineering to join the Peace Corps. She spent time in Botswana where she was able to teach engineering to high schoolers and made life-long friendships.

When she returned, she received a second major as a physical therapist. She worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, Oregon until she needed extensive back surgery  due to ankylosing spondylitis.

Julia Akilimali grew up in Maryland with her three brothers and seven sisters. Her dad was Ruwandan and emigrated to America as a refugee from Congo during the war.

She attended Job Corps in Astoria and received a degree in IT, then continued on to study at Clatsop Community College. Her next step is to pursue a psychology degree where she can marry IT with it to create adaptive technology.

She works at a memory care in Warrenton.

When she was 17, she was in a severe car accident which left her paralyzed from the neck down.

Lindsay Davis grew up in Southern Oregon as a mill worker's kid.

Her two brothers instilled in her a measure of grit that has propelled her life.

At the age of 19, she found herself as a single mom of a baby. This propelled her
on an interesting journey to find a job that would support her and her newborn.

She worked at the Oregon State University Extension office for 11 years, helping with 4-H.

She is currently the president of the Astoria Chamber and works at Hampton Lumber as the Community Relations gal.

Jess Tantisook is the executive director of the North Coast Food Web, a nonprofit based in Astoria, Oregon.

She grew up in Tennessee and now lives in Ilwaco, Washington. 

Her degree was in Communications, but a class she took in college on Viticulture and Enology
led her to an interest in fresh produce. 

She volunteered on a farm in Washington and eventually moved there.

The Food Web provides education and help to local farmers- those wanting to 
begin farming, need information about agriculture as well as business sense.
They recently held a class called How to Run a Profitable Farmers Market Booth.

They have opened an online shopping experience, available through their website, where local farmers bring their produce, individuals can order online and pick up their items in Astoria.

The Food Web also takes SNAP benefits so that low income individuals can receive $40 worth of produce for $20. Through Tillamook Food Routes, they piloted a home food delivery service that went all the way from Nehalem to Ilwaco.  It was free for folks that identified as low income and then it was $10 for anyone else.

They have a commercial kitchen available which they rent out to anyone.

Today I had the delightful experience of interviewing Morgan Burdick. She is an energetic, motivated and inspiring young woman.

 She has 

• worked at NGO’s in India and Honduras, 
• speaks 5 languages
• has 3 bachelor’s degrees including social work and nursing
• and is working on her second master’s degree
• lives in Beaverton, Oregon 
• works as a hospital nurse
• In her spare time, she gardens and raises a few chickens for eggs.
