May 19, 2017WiSP World NZ: Zoe George, Sophie Devine, Melodie Robinson, Thamsyn Newton, Ruby TuiZoe George and Sophie Devine have another great line up of guests and stories this month discussing everything from team selection to sport’s journalism and mental health to potty parity. Sport’s journalist Melodie Robinson is a familiar face to sports fans in New Zealand. The former Black Ferns player can be found in front of the camera fronting coverage of men’s rugby. Along with fellow journalist, Rikki Swannell, who has been a guest on this podcast, they have created The W Group to empower women in sport and media to achieve their goals. Sophie tell us what it means to her to be selected for this summer’s Cricket World Cup after recovering from injury making this her 81st appearance for the White Ferns, and 21 year old Thamsyn Newton stops by to talk about returning to the squad for her ninth cap. As New Zealanders battle with some form of mental illness—from stress and anxiety to depression, Zoe explains how there’s been a ‘she'll be right’ attitude in the past to mental health issues in sport, but now, NZ Rugby has launched a campaign called Headfirst to openly discuss the ‘black dog’, and Black Ferns Sevens player Ruby Tui tells us why this is important; especially when faced with performance anxiety and the inevitable disappointment of being dropped from a team. As usually, Zoe and Sophie have all the latest news and views from sportswomen on and off the field.Special thanks to Radio New Zealand for hosting the show and Producer Laura Beth Keown. For more conversations from the world of women’s sport, visit us at www.wispsports.com and follow us on Twitter @WiSPSports, @zoe_producer and @sophdevine77.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/women-unscripted--4769409/support....more45minPlay

May 01, 2017Amazons - Rebecca LoweEnglish journalist Rebecca Lowe set off on a cross country bike ride with a difference in July 2015. Having specialized in writing about human rights, justice and the law in the Middle East she determined it was time to travel those dusty roads to breathe the air and feel the political and cultural pulse of the region for herself. For nine months she would traverse 20 countries across 3 continents clocking up 6,835 miles or 11,000 kilometers. Part of her motivation was “to tell stories through the lens of people rather than politics. To shun the abstract for the specific, the exceptional for the commonplace. To bring humans back into the debate.” For more go to www.wispsports.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/women-unscripted--4769409/support....more36minPlay

April 26, 2017Locker Room Talk: S1E12 - Sara & Kelly Discuss DopingSara Gross and Kelly O'Mara delve into the issues surrounding doping, including why this topic has been so hot since the 2016 Olympic Games. Who is really in charge of catching cheaters and why the system is flawed? We catch and treat cheaters like criminals but how do we stop athletes from doping in the first place? Also news from the Boston marathon - the first woman to run the race wasn't Katherine Switzer, after all, yet we applaud Katherine regardless. The Gripe of the Week comes from British Cycling’s recent blunder and the Hype of the Week involves a Canadian company that has expanded their line of mannequins to look like “real athletic women.” The Locker Room is a place where women talk about sports.
