As the Lionesses name their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Ellen White reveals that a punctured lung injury prompted her retirement. The USWNT prepares this week for two friendly games and have named Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo to replace Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman who has a family commitment. In motor sport, F1 male driver Sebastian Vettel says he can't see why a woman can't start on F1 grid in contrast to Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali who said it was "very unlikely" that it will happen before 2027. By contrast the Lionesses play at Stoke City and their WC Qualifier v Luxembourg ticket costs 15 pound sterling / $17.73. Naturally we have something to say about that. Meanwhile Barcelona announced they will play championship league games at Camp Nou. On Monday, August 29 the U.S. Open Tennis gets underway at Flushing Meadow, New York through to September 11 and we take a look at the main contenders. And a topic that will likely be discussed more at the Grand Slam is the difference between men’s and women’s balls. Yes, it’s a thing! And over in motor racing the Formula 1 chief says female drivers is unlikely in five years. Did you know that F2 and 3 do not have power steering but Formula 1 does? And while Nancy was away from her desk the European Athletic Championships were held in Munich. Yes, that’s three major meets this summer in quick succession; World Champs, Commonwealth Games and European Champs. August 15, 2022WiSP News Desk: S4E31 - Charlotte Fry Crowned World Dressage ChampionThe World Championships in dressage, jumping, vaulting and para-dressage took place in Herning Denmark August 6-14, 2022. There were 950 riders and vaulters, and 1200 horses from 50 nations. Women took over the podium in the individual dressage when Britain’s Charlotte Fry was crowned World Champion with Denmark’s Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour in silver and Dinja van Liere from The Netherlands in bronze. Denmark (3 women) won the team gold with Great Britain (2 women) silver and Germany (2 women) bronze. Sweden dominated the jumping with team and individual gold. Malin Baryard-Johnnson was the only woman on the Swedish team and Dutch silver medal rider Sanne Thijssen the only other woman winning a team medal. Very unusually, there were no women finishing in the top ten individually in jumping. The other FEI disciplines of eventing and carriage driving hold their world championships September 14-18 in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy. In football, Megan Rapinoe scores two of the four goals in OL Reign’s win over Gotham FC. Nancy has news of the Ballon d'Or Feminin nominees as well as The Women’s Cup and Women’s International Cup which are taking place in the US this week. With two weeks to go to the start of the US Open Tennis —Aug 29 - Sept 11— Serena Williams announces her retirement. We have an update on Brittney Griner who is to appeal her nine-year jail sentence in Russia. England celebrated more success in The Hundred cricket tournament which made its debut last year to rave reviews. August 08, 2022WiSP Newsdesk: S4E30 - 2022 Commonwealth Games HighlightsAs England’s football fans recovered from their win in the Euros at Wembley last week, the Commonwealth Games took center stage in Birmingham with a thrilling week of competition. Of the 26 sports involved it was field hockey and cricket that captured the crowds. attention on the final weekend. England’s 2-1 win over favorites Australia saw a home win 2-1. And on the Edgbaston field Australia’s cricketers made up for the Hockeyroos defeat when they took the gold by beating India in the T20 final. In Badminton, one of India’s greatest sportswomen beat Canadian Michelle Li to add her first Commonwealth gold medal to her world championship title in 2019 and two Olympic medals. Elsewhere, Ultra-runner Kate Jayden set a marathon record with a broken knee. In rugby DMP Sharks may have to withdraw from Premier 15s due to under-funding. August 01, 2022WiSP News Desk: S4E29 - England's Lionesses RoarWomen’s sport is celebrating not just in the UK but around the world as football fans watched England defeat Germany 2-1 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium to capture the European Championship this past weekend. The scenes at the North London venue were unprecedented in women’s football with a crowd of 87,192 creating an atmosphere like no other. The chants of ‘football’s coming home’ echoed far and wide as Sarina Weigman’s team did what so few teams have historically been able to in this tournament—they beat eight-time champions Germany. That the game went to extra-time only underscored the Lionesses resilient form that they showed all tournament and served to reinforce the remarkable leadership that is Sarina Weigman. She has empowered her team like no other manager in England’s history and led the team to a European victory, just as she did with her native Dutch team in 2017. The tournament attendance topped 574,875 (In The Netherlands in 2017 it was 240,055) and the UK TV audience reached 17.4 million ( the 2019 Women’s World Cup was 11.7 million). Chris and Nancy share their thoughts on the final and what it will take to keep the momentum going for girls and women in football and beyond. In other news, The Netherlands Annemiek van Vleuten won the inaugural Tour de France Femme. Her compatriot; the legend that is Marianne Vos won three of the stages, plus a second and third finish. Meanwhile in Hungary in motorsports W Series, Alice Powell fended off reigning champion Jamie Chadwick to give Britain a total of five finishers in the top ten. In Birmingham, England last week the Commonwealth Games began and Nancy has news of a cycling controversy. In MMA Brazilian Amanda Nunes regained her Bantamweight title defeating American Julianna Pena in a bloody fight.
