May 07, 2019The Horse Show: S4E7 - When It's Your Turn to be ChampionOn this week’s show Chris is joined by Irish equestrian journalist Louise Parkes to review current form of some of the leading riders in dressage, eventing and show jumping now that the spring season is underway. This past weekend Britain’s Piggy French showed her consistency by clinching her first Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials title. This is also Piggy’s first CCI5* win having competed in 324 internationals including 24 at this level. After jumpiing a clear show jumping round in second place it was a nail biting finale when the overnight leader had one rail down which he could afford but not the time faults. Piggy also finished fourth at the Land Rover Kentucky Three Day event the previous week. We will hear from Piggy what it feels like to be the Badminton Champion. And we also have a woman topping the FEI Eventing Rankings too for the first time since 2011 with the World Champion Ros Canter taking over the top spot. Ros sat out the spring events as she awaits her first child, which no doubt she has scheduled to get her back in the tack in time for the European Championships, which take place in Luhmuehlen later this summer. Louise shares news of Irish dressage and the prospects of a team for the European Championships in Rotterdam in August. We also hear about the amazing comeback of Mexican show jumper Lorenza O’Farrill who at 49 rode a winning round fro the Mexican’s to clinch the Nations Cup in Coapexpan this weekend. Lorenza suffered a life-altering accident when she was kicked in the back and need major back and hip surgery to walk again. What a story. May 01, 2019The Bolder Woman: S1E11 - Jeanne Daprano, RunnerU.S. Masters Track & Field athlete Jeanne Daprano will be turning 83 this summer and she’s very careful of what she expects of herself to continue to compete. With a meticulous diet and diligent coach she no longer hammers out distances on the track but instead saves her legs while training on the rowing machine; for which she also holds records for her age group. She focuses on core strength and swimming for cardio, and for the most part saves her running for the races. Jeanne’s local club is the Atlanta Track Club Masters which she has been a member of for almost 20 years. Growing up on a farm in Iowa she has always been active from riding her horse to school and helping on the land. Jeanne played basketball in high school and college in Nebraska, but didn't take up running until she started jogging on the beach while working on her master's degree in California. She was 45 before she started taking running seriously and five years later she was competing internationally. She holds the current world records in the W70 mile, W75 400 metres, 800 metres, in addition to the pending W75 mile record. Indoors she hold the W75 records in those same events and is on the W60 4x400 metres relay. She also holds the American records in the W70 400 metres, W65 and W70 800 metres, and W70 1500 metres. In the summer of 2012, she became the first woman over 75 to run under a seven minute mile with a time of 6:58.44. Chris Stafford spoke to Jeanne at her home in Atlanta, Georgia before she went on her daily walk. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. April 30, 2019The Horse Show: S4E6 - Daniela Moguel; Where There's A WillMexican event rider Daniela Moguel competed in her third Kentucky Three Day Event this past weekend with the mare Cecelia, her partner at the 2015 Pan American Games where they finished 12th and later went on to 2018 World Equestrian Games. Her journey to the top of the sport has been been an adventure born on determination to do the sport she loves in spite of growing up in a country where eventing is not a popular sport even within the equestrian world. It was in her home town of Mexico City where her story began and her love of horses drew her to the El Alfil Riding Club where she was to take her first lessons. Mexico’s leading equestrian sport is show jumping so it was there that she began to learn to compete. Daniela tells the story of how some time later she saw a photo of a woman jumping through water that caught her eye and made her want to try eventing. It was to be some time later that she connected with that rider, Karen O’Connor, who became her coach and friend. With 11 horses in her barn in Shelby, North Carolina and training alongside her husband Zully Martinez, Daniela has her sights set on her second Pan American Games this summer riding her nine year old Selle Francais gelding Chalok, and, with Cecelia, qualifying this fall for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Chris Stafford caught up with Daniela after she had arrived home and Cecelia was out in the paddock enjoying some spring grass. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
