In the film Gladiator there is a female Nubian archer on the back of a horse chariot, fighting in the arena. She is a Gladiatrix, a female Gladiator. But how historically correct is her character?

With more evidence coming to light every day about these female fighters, we're trying to unravel the truth behind them and to shed light on their importance and fame throughout ancient Rome.

This mini story is about the Krom Klon, the all female guards of the King of Siam (today's Thailand). They were well trained and excelled in the use of the lance. They even had training sessions, observed by the king, that could have fatal consequences.

This mini story is about the unknown women led slave revolts on slave ships during the Transatlantic slave trade. This episode features excerpts from the book WAKE by dr. Rebecca Hall, Phd. in History.

The Onna Bugeisha were a female warrior class in Japan, who lived during a time when it was tradition to train women to fight to protect the household. They were numerous and as skilled and honorable as the samurai in the art of combat, archery, martial arts and horseback riding.

While they were mainly trained to protect the household, some of them fought on the battlefield along side the men, the samurai, and earned the title of Onna Musha. They honored the same warrior code as the samurai known as bushidó.

The Kingdom of Dahomey, West Africa, ca. 1600-1900. A fierce and all female military unit known to the Europeans as the Dahomey Amazons fought in the front line of every battle with their neighboring tribes. Known in their own language as the Mino these women died for their king and "threw themselves at their enemy". They raided, took captives and killed. But why did they fight and why were they chosen to be warriors?

Meet Olga, the female king who revenged her husband's death and helped shape modern day Ukraine. She is the first recorded female leader of the area which is now Ukraine, Belarus and parts of Russia. Not only did she use clever war tactics to fight off her enemies, she was an instrumental part of the shaping of the dynasty today referred to as Kyivan Rus.

She was a fierce fighter and protector of her People, yet never mentioned by name by the white man. Throughout the Apache Wars she eluded American and Mexican soldiers again and again, and she lived until the final surrender of the last free Apache alongside Geronimo. In this first episode of our two-part episode we will cover the culture and heritage of the Chiricahua Apache and the beginning of the Apache Wars - with Lozen in the narrative.
