1. We are in a battle. (vs.11)
A. Good and evil are at war. (11) Evil = sinful desires. Do what’s best for me. Good = serving desires. Do what’s best for others.
B. The temptation is to place more value on ourselves than others. It’s a battle in the mind and in the heart.
C. The plan is to live such good lives that they can’t deny God’s love. (12).
2. We are to live correctly in the world. (13)
A. We are to be submit to authorities. We are to do it for the Lord’s sake. (13) I.O.W. So that we don’t misrepresent Him. They are looking for reasons not to listen to us.
B. We are to follow God’s will. (15) When we do good, we silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
C. We are to influence the ignorant and foolish to be knowledgeable and wise. To lead them to understand who God is and their need for Him.
D. We are to show proper respect to everyone. (17) – They are created by God just like us. – They are loved by God just like us. – They are wanted by God just like us. – We are all valuable to God.
3. We are to have the right attitude when we face unfairness. (18-22) The example of slaves.
A. We are to bear unjust suffering. We aren’t to live to get them back (2-3, retaliate), we are to respond in a way that brings remorse and a change of heart. We are to act in such a way that encourages a change of heart. (23-25) That’s what Jesus did for us.
B. We are to be willing to suffer for doing what is good. (20) This is our calling. (21) Christ suffered for us. He is our example. (22)
