Practical Warnings (James 4:1-10)
1. The Sin of Spiritual Adultery – v1-4
a. Watch your ‘Wanter’ – The progression from desire to desperation to destruction is startling – Ken Sande – I Desire, I Demand, I Judge, I Punish
b. as old as Adam & Eve – Genesis 3:6 – and progressed into their children’s lives in tragic fashion
c. as new as our most recent idols – Our rights; Our bodies; Our Traditions; Our Politics; Our Team; Our Kids; Our Autonomy! – Me, Me, Me
d. Friend of God (2:23) or Friend of the World?2. The Love behind Spiritual Jealousy – v5
a. God loves you deeply – Jer. 33:3
b. God is jealous for you – Ex 20:5; 34:14; 1K14:22; Zec 8:2
c. The world wants to draw you away
d. Your flesh wants to draw you away
e. God actively opposes your pride!3. The Solution is Spiritual Humility – v6-9 – But, He gives more Grace – Aren’t you glad?!
a. Grace flows in the direction of humility
b. Humility begins with submission
c. Submission empowers your ability to resist evil
d. Draw near to God and He will close the gap.
e. Humility asks for cleansing as we mourn over our sin. Where are the tears?
f. Where is the brokenness? Psalm 51:7-12, 16-174. The Result is Spiritual Vitality – v10
a. He will exalt you
b. You are His child
c. He sees Jesus in you – Phil 1:6
d. He is working to make you like Jesus – Rom 8:29
e. This is the path Jesus followed! – Phil 2:5-11
f. So, have this mind in you – Is it? Do you think this way? ii. Have you submitted to Him, completely?
iii. Are you resisting the Devil, or is he having a field day in your life?
iv. Are you drawing near?
v. Can you feel His presence as He draws near to you?
vi. Do you need to spend some time weeping and mourning over your sin?
vii. Do you realize how it has grieved your Heavenly Father?
viii. Be broken before Him
xi. He can’t do that until you bend low and humble yourselves.
