Hey, Jonah – I have a question!
What Will You Do With Your 2nd Chance?
1. Which way are you going?
2. Will God use your disobedience? / At what cost?
3. Are you ready for rescue?
4. And Today, Hey, Jonah – What will you do with your 2nd chance?
a. Jonah 3:1-3; sound familiar – an exact repeat of 1:1-3 with one key difference – this time Jonah goes to Nineveh – according to the Word of the Lord!5. God doesn’t owe us a 2nd chance!
a. Only by His Grace
b. We don’t deserve it – Eph 2:8-9
c. Jonah didn’t and he knew it – through God’s creative rescue and his regurgitation back on dry land.6. Jonah is now owning his 2nd chance – v3-4
a. He committed to it while still in the Fish – 2:9
b. He still looks and smells like someone who just came out of a fish!
c. He is going according to the word of the Lord!7. Jonah delivers a clear and concise 8-word sermon. V 5
a. Yet 40 days – the time is fixed
b. And Nineveh might be overthrown! – Your end is sure8. And – Wow! The people of Nineveh believed God!
a. V5 – greatest miracle in the OT
b. Noah and the Ark; Creation; Isaac; Moses; The Red Sea….Gideon; Samson…Goliath
c. A Pagan nation responding in repentance and faith - to an 8-word message from the Holy Creator God, delivered by a reluctant prophet!
d. I’ll take that!9. Their repentance started at the top with their leader – from the greatest to the least – v5-9
a. The king humbled himself
b. And led the others to follow his example
c. Proclaiming a Total Fast from food or water i. What would you do without in order to show God your heart is His?
d. The path to revival is Brokenness, Surrender/Confession, Holiness/Commitment
e. V9 – Who knows? i. Ezekiel 33:11; 2 Peter 3:8-10
10. Their repentance represented a desperation to be rescued.
a. How desperate are we?
b. We say God must judge or is already judging America for her many sins and outright rejection of God.
c. Are we ok with that happening on our watch?
d. Where is the outcry; where is the desperation; where is the humble repentance in the Church!
e. I get it – we are weary; we are tired; we have given up – Can God save America? We conclude, He can’t.
f. God forgive us. And, I am here to tell you – He can; He is! He wants to do it - in us and then through us!11. God always responds to sincere repentance! V 10
a. He extended incredible’ AMAZING Grace to the People of Nineveh i. For nearly 200 yrs he extended their existence, before their final destruction in 612 BC; Did that matter?
ii. Does that matter today? – let’s fast forward 2750 years – Hey, Chuck – come tell us a story!
iii. Matthew 12:39-41 – as great as Jonah’s story is - They repented at his preaching – Someone greater is here in our midst!
iv. What will you do with Jesus?
- Death, Resurrection, Calling – for you!
