We discussed the final tools of analysis taken away from Truman: the basic human need to belong; asking the right questions; vocabulary; a third world culture; and who the influencers are.

We discuss “tools of cultural analysis” gleaned from Carl Truman’s The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. To begin we highlighted Matt 16:2-3; Luke 19:42; Isa 44:6-45:21; Eph 2:2; Rom 12:1-2. The tools we discussed were the “social imaginary,” mimesis versus poiesis, and the power of the human need to belong.

On episode 10 of Worldview we covered Trueman’s chapter 9: The Triumph of the Therapeutic (The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self). We discussed the absurdity of the logic of the Supreme Court decisions to legalize abortion. We discussed the lack of free speech on college campuses epitomized by the Middlebury College mission statement from Beyond the Green: Collective of Middlebury Voices. We discussed the anti-historical stance of the modern left demonstrated by the curricula offered by the Harvard history department. We concluded by reading Jeremiah 25 and Deut 32:7.

Money and sex are untied and undefeated in ruining a culture (Num 22-25; Amos 2:6-8; 2 Sam 11; 1 Kgs 10:14-11:40). The United States has fallen prey to sex. In episode 9 we cover Trueman’s chapter 8, “The Triumph of the Erotic,” (The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self). Listen to how Trueman precisely describes the marketing of sex in America from the foundation of Rousseau and Freud to the rise of Surrealism to the prominence of Hugh Hefner. We have lost this battle. The erotic reigns supreme in Western culture.

Discussion of chapter 7 which is about critical theory and it's founders. The world can be divided into the opressors and oppressed. Truth is just a contstruct designed to preserve the power structure of the status quo. The goal of critical theory is to destabilize the power structure by destroying the dominant narrative. In the case of western civilization, that would be Christianity, marriage, family, etc.

Discussion of chapter 6: Sigmund Freud, Civilization, and Sex. We talk about the sexualization of western culture.
