The explosive growth of the church led to various reactions from the religious leaders. The Book of Joel is a timeless call to repentance with the promise of blessing. Zephaniah warned the people of Judah that if they refused to repent, the entire nation, including the city of Jerusalem would be lost. The people knew that God would eventually bless them, but Zephaniah made it clear that there would be judgment first, then blessing. God does not take sin lightly and it will be punished. While many prophets speak God’s word to us, Habakkuk speaks our words to God. He gives voice to our bewilderment regarding evil in the world and insists that God pay attention to his questions, concerns and confusion. Have you ever been called a hypocrite? Or have you ever called someone a hypocrite? Do we even know what that means? According to Merriam-Webster the word hypocrite is described as: 1) a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion or 2) a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings. Nahum, like Jonah, was a prophet to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Jonah had seen Nineveh repent 100 years earlier but the city had fallen back into wickedness. Assyria seemed unstoppable as they had already conquered the northern kingdom, Israel, and were threatening the southern kingdom, Judah. The final verses of chapter 4 provide a glimpse into the inner workings of the early church. The first-century Christians enjoyed a sense of closeness and unity that caused the world to sit up and take notice. It’s one thing to talk of loving others, it’s quite another to sell your valuable possessions and give the proceeds to those in need. Yet that kind of generosity was common in the early church.
