Values shape our priorities. We invest time, energy, money, and other resources into what we value. Our values also shape how we interact with others. For example, if we value our jobs or the tasks more than the people with whom we work our interactions with others may become cold and calculated. We see them as objects—not as people. Today we’ll talk about the Anointing, the Earnest and the Communion of the Holy Spirit as well as looking at every New Testament Scripture that speaks of the phrase “Filled with the Holy Spirit.” These precious relationships are almost entirely neglected in today’s church. Sometimes we talk about the Gospel’s power to help us live better lives. Other times we may talk about the blessing of having Jesus to help us with our problems. But at its core, the Gospel is not about making bad people good. In Ephesians 2:1-5 it says we were dead in our sins, yet God made us alive through Jesus. We sometimes celebrate ourselves and, in the process, lose sight of the goal. Have you ever heart Aesop’s fable about The Hare and the Tortoise? It’s about a race between a tortoise and a hare and it ends with the persistent turtle beating the over-confident rabbit. As we begin to explore today’s text we’re going to see that Ezekiel addresses a prideful king who was counting his victories only to discover that he had no reason to confidently claim to be the eternal king. So far in this series we’ve talked about the Bible, God and Jesus. Today we’re going to talk about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the most misunderstood and least talked about part of the God-head. So we’re going to change that, we’re going to talk about Him...a lot. In today’s study we’ll talk of a time when some elders approached Ezekiel to inquire of God with the expectation that God would respond. But God’s response wasn’t what they expected. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Jesus was a great moral teacher, and certainly a good man, but he was not the Son of God?” Or something similar? Many people have said something similar— politicians, celebrities and religious leaders. Even the Dalai Lama made a statement to that effect once. Everyone needs encouragement. But encouragement needs to reflect truth. We can do more harm than good by creating a false reality in the name of hope. This can also happen when we cross the line between hope and wishing or if we confuse those two things. The Bible describes hope as a confident assurance based on God’s promises. Those promises can be trusted because they originate with the One who is truth Himself. Today we’ll talk about how God offers hope in the midst of judgment to those who trust in Him, so let’s go!
