  • 66. Army Wife Network
    Show Notes | August 20, 2020 | Episode 66

This episode is sponsored by our military spouse employment partners at Instant Teams.

In this episode, Kimber talks with Army Wife Network Owner and "Commander" Sharita Knobloch.

Sharita refers to the events that led to her current job as "one big no-plan plan." First of all, she didn't expect to fall in love with a soldier, and she never could have imagined volunteer blogging in 2014 would lead to her role today.

Army Wife Network is a source for all things military life. The network's mission is to engage, educate, encourage and empower its members through resources, podcasts, blogs and more.

Even though Army is in the title, the network's resources apply to all branches of the military, and not just spouses, but also friends, parents, siblings and even business owners.

When a military family gets PCS orders, they have questions: What's the best school district? Restaurant? Dentist? What's the weather like?

Which makes Post with the Most, a detailed guide of 45 Army-specific duty stations around the globe, one of Army Wife Network's most popular resources.

Most of the network's content is generated by an army of volunteers spread across the globe, writing about their experiences ranging from PCSing and how to embrace the suck, to parenting and infertility.

Milspouse life is an adventure and Sharita wants other spouses to know they are not alone in this journey thanks to resources like Army Wife Network and VirtForce.

Tune in to this week's episode to hear what's next for Army Wife Network and how you can get involved.

  • 65. #Hired: Know What Your Skills are Worth
    Show Notes | August 18, 2020 | Episode 065

Jeannine Ricker heard about VirtForce by accident.

She was perusing through a couple of other military affiliated and spouse employment opportunity websites when she just happened to stumble upon the VirtForce podcast.

Through the podcast Jeannine was able to improve her LinkedIn profile and virtual interview skills to get #hired.

After a PCS, Jeannine explored virtual employment for about four to six months before she solidified the direction she wanted for her remote career.

With a master's degree, Jeannine was overqualified for many part-time remote positions, but found an opportunity where she can prove her worth.

She is now a remote administrative assistant for a small medical practice focused in infectious disease. She works about three hours a day, or 15 hours a week, in her part-time role.

Jeannine landed the job after learning remote interview tactics through VirtForce's free course How to Ace Your Virtual Interview. It gave her a window into what the hiring manager would see during her virtual job interview.

Jeannine's advice for listeners? Perfect your elevator pitch and know what your skills are worth.

Even if a salary is posted and you are overqualified, Jeannine advises to at least give the opportunity a shot to show what you are really worth.

Knowing what you have and what you can do to help build your career is going to make employers more willing to pay you what you should be getting paid, she says.

As a military spouse, Jeannine finds remote work - or as she puts it, the opportunity to do what she can whenever she can - very helpful.

Tune in to hear more about why you should do your research on skills and salary.

If you are a new listener to VirtForce podcast, we would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] and let us know how we can help you today!

    Show Notes | August 11, 2020 | Episode 063

After joining VirtForce, Alicia Emmel found two surprises – a killer new remote career AND a new friend.

She researched different companies by combing through the VirtForce Facebook Group's posts and comments, and found an opportunity to become a revenue cycle analyst at Ensemble Health Partners.

Alicia also met amazing Army wife Kristy Stearnes (not pictured) through the group who sent her job postings and positive vibes through her entire job search process.

As a piece of advice, Alicia (pictured above with her wife Tiff) would encourage you to do your research and put in the time. A job is NOT going to fall in your lap!

She admits, while it is easy to get discouraged, if you put in the time and effort, you will get a call.

Every time a hiring manager asked, “Alicia, how did you hear about this job?” She said, “VirtForce!”

Nine times out of 10, HR recruiters were interested in the group. Not only did they ask Alicia more about it, but they became members to see who is out there looking for jobs.

So, keep in mind, there could be HR recruiters among us checking out the group. Hi recruiters. Welcome! ????

    Show Notes | August 4, 2020 | Episode 061

What’s the one piece of job search advice Laura would get tattooed across her forehead if she could? "Don’t solely rely on online applications!"

After taking a few months off after having her daughter and moving back to the US from overseas, Laura landed her dream job as a part-time, remote career coach. Laura is certain she would NOT have the job she has today if she just applied online. It was an informational interview that led to Laura getting #hired.

Laura will be the first to admit, it is intimidating to network. It’s hard to build a network, especially when you’re looking for a remote job because it all must be done virtually. But, informational interviews, which is simply talking to people who have the job you want, can help determine if you are even searching in the right career field.

You can also get special access to opportunities that might not be posted yet because you took the time and effort to build up your network. Tune in to hear more about how Laura balanced devoting time to her job search with a new baby.

Want to know a secret? The trick to cover letters is not to skimp or provide the minimal amount of effort. Your cover letter is not just an extra chore, rather it is an opportunity to show off experiences that are not easily verbalized in a resume. In this episode, we talk about how cover letters (both written and video) and design are your secret weapons when applying for a job.

We also cover one of the best ways to overcome the resume gap or to avoid looking like you have arbitrarily hopped from job to job. Did you ever realize you can totally ditch specific dates?
