In today's episode, we are thrilled to sit down with Ben Killoy from Military Veteran Dad. Through his podcast, Ben is teaching dads to ignite passion for fatherhood and creating an environment to help male veterans come home physically and mentally.

There is a joke in the military, "if the military wanted you to have something, they would have issued it." There are no orders or issued resources that teach you how to process a feeling or how to deal with that feeling in reality. While service members spend months training to go to war, they spend mere days training to come home.

Ben launched his business, while being a stay-at-home dad, to raise the bar on the fatherhood journey and to help dads realize that they can step powerfully into this journey and be present with the gift that is your family. After his position was eliminated, Ben was able to transition his "side hustle" and the podcast he had on his heart into his purpose. He has created his business entirely from home. Military Veteran Dad is a 100% virtual organization that is able to serve fathers all over the work.

    Show Notes | June 23, 2020 | Episode 045

How many of you have passed up the opportunity to apply for a job because you disqualified yourself after reading the job description? We have all done it at some point. We read the job description and think there is no way they would consider us for this position. We come up with excuse after excuse (usually all made up in our head). But here’s the truth: you are what you speak. If you feel like you qualify for a job but are  unsure because of the description, reach out and ask for clarification. You never know, it could help you get #hired!

In this episode, Samantha talks about how she inquired after a position that she wasn’t too confident about securing due to her location and ended up landing it.

Time for a truth bomb: women are far less likely to negotiate their job offer than men. Crazy, we know. Since our VirtForce community is primarily women (92% women, 8% men), we want to take the time to teach you how to develop your negotiation skills. Remember: once you receive that offer letter, you could be negotiating for a variety of things. You could be negotiating for higher pay, more paid vacation time, fully-remote work, or a guarantee that your job will be secure through a PCS.

In this episode, Kimber walks listeners through specific scenarios and gives you the tips and tricks to navigate each one (hint: not everything is negotiable).

Let’s go back and reread that last paragraph. Did you notice we said “once you receive that offer letter”? This is such an important part of negotiating - knowing the right time to bring up money and the strategies you can use to be successful.

One of the most important things to understand is that not everything is negotiable. You have to learn to use your best judgment and know when negotiation is and isn’t on the table.

Once you understand that (don’t worry, we’ll tell you what to look for), you’ll start to see where there is room to negotiate. This episode is bursting at the seams with specific scenarios, strategies to use, and fully-laid out timelines to support you as you negotiate your way through your career.

    Ring Light
Your ring light is completely optional, but here are three reasons why you should invest:

Your ring light makes your lovely face appear much brighter and clearer which can help interviewers remember you and can help your coworkers feel more of a connection with you.
Your ring light doubles as a Seasonal Affective Disorder device, meaning if you don’t get a lot of sunlight, your Ring Light LED function can help boost your mood!
Your ring light can help wake you up. If you’re feeling dull or draggy, turn on your ring light and  get an extra boost of energy!

    Headphones
For your video and audio meetings, you need great headphones. When purchasing, remember that bluetooth is not always reliable so purchase headphones that are bluetooth capable and will plug into your computer.
Low cost over the ear options include Plantronix and SkullCandy.

If you have loud neighbors or distractions at home, consider noise cancelling headphones. I personally use the Bose Noise Cancelling 700, but the older mode, Bose Quiet Comfort, is also a wonderful more cost effective option.

If you need more motivation to choose Bose, their products come with unparalleled customer support and warranty protection. If you have to replace a product, your warranty starts all over brand new with your replacement product.
    Ethernet Cable & Dongle
An ethernet cable runs from your internet router directly into your computer providing you uninterrupted cable access to consistent internet. When you’re on calls and video meetings, you should always be connected to ethernet for best quality.

An Ethernet Dongle is an adapter that will convert that big bulky ethernet head to a USB port if your computer does not have an ethernet port. You may or may not need this dongle, but if your computer is newer, it is essentially a requirement these days.
    Additional Monitors
Every work from home PRO will tell you that adding a monitor is a complete GAME CHANGER for productivity. You can add 2 additional monitors to supplement your primary screen comfortably. You can even purchase an extra large gamin monitor or gaming TV screen to support the visual real estate you may need for your role.
    Outlet Organizer and Surge Protector
In a home office, or in any office, cord management can be the thorn in your side. The most useful desktop gadget to eliminate this problem is a surge protector that organizes your devices.
