  • EP 991 – Develop Your People Skills

So what are people skills? And why do these skills matter in this age where communication is more focused on texting and messaging?

People Skills are a set of skills enabling a person to get along with others, to communicate their ideas effectively, to resolve conflicts, and to achieve personal and business goals.

One issue of having information at the tips of our fingers all times is that you can get any answer to a question, anytime and anywhere, by simply typing it into a mobile device or computer.  Many have not learned to branch out, ask questions and connect with other humans to learn and gain people skills.

One of the most important factors in gaining influence and achieving success, is developing strong, positive, and effective people skills.

So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating International People Skills Month:

Learn to ask great questions that people are excited to answer and then listen attentively. You will engage at a much deeper level than the superficial ‘how are you doing?’’

Be authentic. Authenticity breeds trust, and trust breeds relationships.

Engage with a story. The secret to persuading people is to tell an effective story. Connect to their head, heart and soul.

Be contagious. A bad mood impacts those around us. A good mood, full of energy can produce more energy in others.

Employers often seek out those who have these strong interpersonal skills as they have the ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively and display the commitment and work ethic that they require.

  • EP 990 – Slip, Slap, Slop For Sun Protection

Are you protected from the sun under an umbrella?

How about on a cloudy day?

Do you think you’re protected from the sun under the water?

Does a baseball cap protect you from the sun?

Are you protected from the sun if you go to a tanning salon first?

Not sure of the answers, then you need to find out, as it could save your life.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer since it’s more likely to spread to other parts of the body. It is increasing in both men and women. Non-melanoma skin cancer, a less deadly type of skin cancer, is the most commonly occurring cancer, accounting for about one-third of all cancer cases.

So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Sun Awareness Week:

Reduce sun exposure between 11am and 4pm.

Seek shade or create your own shade.

Think Slip – Slap – Slop

Slip! on clothing to protect your arms and legs.

    Slap! on a wide-brimmed hat.

Slop! on sunscreen with SPF #15 or higher.

Be Prepared and Stay Safe In The Sun

  • EP 989 – Build Resiliency By Leaving Early

“Control the events in your life or the events in your life will control you.”

In these busy times, leaving early may seem like a death sentence to your career.

We know that in spite of the advances in technology, many of us are working longer hours than our parents and chronic illnesses such as burnout, heart disease and depression are on the rise.

In order to maintain our health and our productivity, we must ensure that we have energy.

So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Leave The Office Earlier Day:

Leaving early is just one strategy in an attempt to not let time control you. By consciously planning to leave early one day this week, I am betting that you will be much more focused and will feel a renewed sense of balance in your life.

What would you do if you had 20 minutes of ‘free time’ time today? What would you do if you had 1 hour or 2 hours extra?

What priority would you focus on – your health – your kids – your spouse – your gardens – your dog – your community?

Leaving Early Day is an awareness of how time slips away from us. It’s about failing to make our priorities a priority in our life. Our work is important, and we owe it to ourselves and our employer to be present, creative and healthy. How? Control your schedule and be purposeful with your time.

  • EP 988 – Let’s Go To The Drive-In

I have some great memories of going to the drive-in with friends. Staying up late for the dusk to dawn movies on the long weekends. I loved taking my own kids to see the latest Disney flick at our local drive-in, one of the few remaining ones in our area. The boys would be dressed in their jammies, pillows and blankets ready, popcorn to snack on as we waited for the sun to set and the movie to begin.

Even now, my husband and I will head to the movies during the summer for date night.

Did you know that the creator of the drive-in did so to help his mother enjoy the theatre in a more comfortable seat way back in 1933. These drive-ins saw their heydays in the 50’s to 80’s, but sadly, with movies on demand, many of these local drive-ins have closed.

So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Drive In Movie Day:

Gather your family together and head to the drive-in. Enjoy the experience of watching a movie on an outdoor big screen. And if you do, use #DriveInMovieDay to post on social media.

If you don’t have a drive-in close by, plan a trip and take in this unique experience before many of these local treasures shut down.

  • EP 987 – Take A Break And Camp

We will sit by the camp-fire and sing a song or two.  There will be peace and happiness.  It will be a wonderful bonding experience.  And everything will be right in the world…

Not bloody likely! as my European friends say.

I love camping, but it certainly never matched my expectations of what a family camping trip should be like.  We were closer to the Griswold’s with everyone arguing and sometimes wishing they were somewhere or with someone else.

So why do we still go?

Because camping is really no different than the rest of our lives.  We have moments of chaos, arguing and not getting along, mixed with other moments of happiness, laughter and peace.  Many memories have been made through frantically packing up in the rain, backing up over a deer antler and blowing a tire, and cooking our dinner by the fire.  We have enjoyed kayaking, canoeing and swimming races and our bets on who could catch the biggest, most and ugliest fish.  We have sat on the beach, and in folding chairs by the fire and have snuggled under the covers.

So Here are today’s Hot Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Camping Month:

Try to go with the flow and let go of your mental picture of what camping should look like.

Chaos Aside, Camping Is A Great Break

Even with all of the effort and potential for chaos, camping represents a break from the everyday for me.  I enjoy some family time and some alone-time, and I get a chance to appreciate nature and all of the beauty it offers.
