  • Experience What You Manage

"Experience what you manage to make better decisions as a leader."

As a business leader it is incredibly important to build trust with your team. One way to do that is by getting involved in the work that your team does. This was something I saw firsthand when I worked at Walt Disney World. Managers were often seen on the frontlines interacting with Cast Members and guests. There are so many benefits to leaders being present and experiencing different roles in their organization firsthand.

By getting out of your office and doing the work alongside your team members, you can build trust, improve communication, and gain a better understanding of how your decisions affect those working for you. Spend more time walking around and genuinely asking if there is anything you can help with. This will make employees feel valued and more likely to approach you with questions or concerns.

Being present also helps you build a better relationship with your team members. You will gain a deeper understanding of their unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives. This will enable you to lead with greater empathy and understanding, which in turn will create a more cohesive and successful team. Similarly, you will have a more complete understanding of how the decisions made in the boardroom affect those on the front lines.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    • how gaining hands-on exposure can level up your management skills
    • ways of fostering better relationships with your frontline workforce
    • the art of strategic engagements with field personnel for improved leadership
    • communication skills to bridge gaps between management and staff
    • how to use planned site visits into your leadership routines for optimized results

Do you want to create a work environment where your team trusts each other, communicates effectively, and achieves greater success together? If so, it's not enough to simply manage from the sidelines. To truly build trust and foster communication within your team, it's essential that you experience what they do on a daily basis by immersing yourself in their work.

"Being on the front line will become a recruitment and retention tool."

  • Good Leaders Act Like Humans

"People want to know that you care first before they want to know what you know."

I'll never forget the day when I truly understood the power of vulnerability and authenticity as a leader. I was hosting my World at Work podcast, and my daughters were playing in the adjacent room. Their lively chatter and giggles could be heard in the background. Instead of trying to hide it, I decided to acknowledge the situation and embrace my role as a father. This small, yet pivotal moment taught me that people appreciate leaders who are genuine and authentic, not just all-business. That was the day it clicked; good leaders act like humans.

It is crucial to show people you're human and not just a robotic figure of authority. By sharing more about your life, hobbies, and family, you could create a more human-centered workplace. You can create a space where trust and openness are highly valued.

In this episode, you will learn:

    • the key role human-centered workplaces play in employee retention and satisfaction
    • the art of building trust by fostering authenticity and vulnerability in your leadership style
    • the impact of meaningful interactions on an organization's overall performance and success
    • the need to prioritize human-centric management approaches for a thriving work culture
    • the vital ingredients to cultivate a cohesive and high-performing team environment

This human-centered approach not only improved relationships within my team but also increased overall productivity and morale. By allowing myself to be seen as a person, not just a leader, I was able to create an environment where others felt comfortable sharing their own struggles and successes. This type of vulnerability is what sets great leaders apart from the rest.

Listen to this latest episode to discover why being a human-centered leader is a powerful retention and recruitment strategy. Leaders are not just coworkers, but also real people with families and hobbies.

Jody has a personal experience with a transparent hiring process. He was given clear feedback despite not getting the job, which unfortunately isn't the case for many people.

Episode Highlights 00:02:50 - there are several reasons why hiring managers may procrastinate on giving feedback to unsuccessful job candidates. It is important to not put it off to maintain a good reputation. 00:04:14 - hiring managers should commit to a follow-up date with job candidates and to keep them informed of any delays or changes. 00:06:34 - use a motivational-based interviewing scoring system to determine the best fit for a role. Be honest with job candidates about their fit for the role, while also maintaining a positive and respectful tone. 00:09:21 - examples of receiving a job offer and feedback on unsuccessful job interviews. Positive and respectful feedback has an impact on job candidates, even when they do not get the job. 00:12:35 - referrals are important and can add value to your pipeline. • How to Show You're Action-Oriented in an Interview

"Being able to be action oriented is so important because people at the end of the day, they're hiring you to solve a problem."

In an episode of the World at Work podcast, Cassie and I talk about the significance of being action-oriented during job interviews and on resumes. One of the most important things in an interview is sharing specific examples and experiences. Avoid providing hypothetical responses. By using acronyms like OAR (obstacle, action, and result) or PAR (problem, action, and result), job seekers can effectively structure their interview answers.

There is also a lot of value I things like detailed data and metrics in resumes to showcase accomplishments. As technology has led to shorter attention spans, being specific and using storytelling helps candidates stand out and demonstrate their expertise, knowledge, and skills to potential employers.

After listening to this episode, you will:

Master the art of displaying an action-oriented approach in both interviews and resumes.

Hone your ability to provide specific and compelling workplace examples and stories.

Leverage the OAR/PAR acronym for generating structured and effective interview responses.

Shift your focus from hypothetical answers to real-life experiences when discussing professional situations.

Boost your credibility by showcasing your achievements through the use of data and metrics.

Are you feeling frustrated and stuck trying to showcase your proactivity with just general examples in interviews and resumes? Break free from the status quo and discover how to effectively capitalize on your professional experiences to make a lasting impression. Reach out to Best Culture Solutions so we can help you proactively update your resume and prepare you for your next interview.

"You can't take on leadership if you're not action oriented. It's all about taking action, taking the lead on something."

    Episode Highlights

00:02:12 - Tim defines action-oriented as the tendency to take action when problems present themselves, finding areas where you can positively influence things, and taking action on those items.

00:04:04 - Being action-oriented means that you are more likely to help organizations solve their problems, which is why employers are interested in candidates who demonstrate this trait.

00:07:47 - Carol Quinn's concept of an internal or external locus of control is useful for demonstrating action-orientedness, while questions about how candidates have solved problems in the past can provide opportunities to show how they take action.

00:13:36 - Job seekers should share specific stories, examples, and actions they took during the interview. Being afraid to share too much or being too high-level in responses can hurt the job seeker. Specificity is key to answering questions effectively and leaving a lasting impression on the interviewer.

00:15:01 - Specific examples are crucial in answering interview questions effectively. Hypothetical answers won't leave a lasting impression on the interviewer. Sharing the obstacle, action, and result is a useful acronym to follow during interviews. It's important to use specific examples of accomplishments on resumes too.

00:19:00 - Job seekers should use the OAR or PAR method when answering interview questions. The OAR method stands for Obstacle, Action, Result, and the PAR method stands for Problem, Action, Result. Using specific examples and actions is more effective than hypothetical answers.

00:21:08 - The action taken in a specific example is the most important part of an effective interview answer. The result is not as crucial as the action. Interviewers often ask hypothetical questions, but it's essential to provide specific examples. Using the OAR or PAR method can help job seekers prepare for interviews.

  • The Best Retention Strategy is a Great Leader

"People will care as much as you show them that you care."

In this episode of World at Work, Jody Maberry joins me to talk about the irony of the best retention strategy for an organization: giving people a great boss.

When I took on a team struggling with low motivation and high turnover, I never expected that the key to success would be found in the power of genuine care. With dedication and the guidance of books like Creating Magic, I began to witness a remarkable transformation in my team. Prior to then, I had no idea the impact my own self-care would have on the success of my leadership.

In this episode, you will be able to:

Discover the power behind genuine care in enhancing leadership and employee retention.

Develop personal self-care and mental discipline as the key to becoming an excellent boss. Leverage the use of anonymous feedback surveys for refining leadership skills.

"The best retention strategy that you can have as a leader is to be a great leader."

    00:01:53

Good leaders care about their team, create a positive work environment, offer feedback, and give opportunities for growth.

    00:07:54

leaders should start by taking care of their health first. This self-discipline positively affects their mindset and mental health. Afterward, they should seek help from respected leaders, read books, and attend courses on leadership to improve their skills.

    00:10:53

Seek help from other respected leaders, reading books or taking courses on leadership. Tim shares his experience of seeking advice from Lee Cockerell's book, Creating Magic, which helped him reduce turnover rates, improve KPI results, and create a healthy work environment.

    00:12:59

Send out anonymous feedback surveys to each team to gain insights on where the leader is supporting them and where they could support better. This will give leaders a chance to take feedback seriously and improve, as well as make changes if necessary.

    00:14:41

Sometimes leaders may be struggling because they are in the wrong role for them or need more attention from their boss. Surveys can help identify these issues and find the right role within the organization that fits them, or even lead to a different conversation.

    00:16:19

It is important to be genuinely upfront with people and having a genuine mindset when conducting surveys. Leaders who prioritize feedback and show they care will see an increase in retention and respect from their team.
