The earliest examples of garden writings are from China, such as the 373 AD work "The Preface to the Orchid Pavillion" by Wang Xizhi, and the importance of Chinese gardens globally waxed and waned over the centuries, culminating in Europe for a mania for anything Chinese, including in gardens in the second half of the 18th century. The Fondation Martin Bodmer have a fabulous exhibition of rare and unusual texts, including an edition of Le Rouge's Engravings of Chinese gardens. Uri is a canton at the heart of Switzerland. Geographically as the link between the north of the alps and the south and historically as one of the first cantons of the early Swiss confederation. But why is one particular meadow in this canton particularly important?

This week Daniel Johnson from the UN takes us through some of the resolutions passed on the last Human Rights Council, which ended on Friday. There were 20 resolutions passed in total. We also hear from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein’s who had a strong message in his final address to the Council.

Also this week, Rights Experts meet on Indigenous People.

Daniel explains a drawing competition to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declrartion of Human Rights. The competition is aimed at 10-14 year-olds (but open to all), asking children the question "What do human rights mean to you?"

Daniel explains the three main ways you can enter;

- Theme 1: the human right that matters the most to you.

- Theme 2: someone you admire for their efforts in defending or promoting human rights.

- Theme 3: How you can defend or promote human rights

and gives some ideas for each.

Drawings can be submitted electronically via the website or emailed to [email protected] with the release form, indicating your name, age and address. Deadline for submitting your drawing: 31 October 2018.

Finalists will be asked to send their original drawing, by post, to the Gabarron Foundation.
