MG&E and Alliant have proposed increases of about $12/month starting next year. In addition to paying for new expenditures on non-fossil fuel energy, the utilities will want customers to pay for the old fossil fuel plants. Will share-holders be responsible for any expense?

Governor Tony Evers released his biennial budget proposal in February. Among his priorities: sweeping investments in K-12 education, tax cuts for the middle class, and a plan to reform Wisconsin’s prison system.

In each of the last three budget sessions, the state’s GOP has stripped down the governor’s proposal and started essentially from scratch. The Legislature’s powerful budget-writing committee, which is under Republican control, is slated to take up the budget tomorrow.

JR Ross is editor of WisPolitics, a multimedia news outlet that covers politics, the government, and business. Speaking with our News Producer Faye Parks this afternoon, Ross explained how budget season works here in Wisconsin – and shared his predictions for the most contentious items.

This time last year, dozens of tents lined the greenspace on Library Mall. A contingent of student activists set up the encampment in solidarity with Gaza, joining a national movement pressuring universities to divest from Israel.

Nearly two weeks after UW-Madison students pitched their tents, university leaders struck a deal…but only after the encampment weathered a forceful police invasion on May 1st.

A lot has changed in the last year.
