Nearly three-quarters of this spring’s city council races are competitive – and while some races are flushed with cash, others are flying under the radar.

The biggest spender this spring? A political action committee funded by the Realtors Association of South Central Wisconsin.

All twenty seats of the Madison city council were on the ballot last night.

Nearly three quarters of the council had competitive elections. The preliminary results are in on those contests.

It’s the Spring Election here in Wisconsin, and on the show today we’re talking about the importance of civics knowledge and public participation with Eve Galanter, founder of the Wisconsin Civics Games. Galanter points to a 2022 survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, in which only 47% of respondents could name all branches of government and 25% of respondents couldn’t name any branch of government. These are startling numbers and point to the importance of civics education.

Last year, six inmates died from either suicide or criminal negligence at Waupun Correction Institution. Another death at the maximum security prison, this time of a 23 year old inmate, was reported earlier this month. National news media covered the subsequent indictment of the warden and eight staff members including the nursing staff for misconduct and abuse of a prisoner.

Now we know that for over a decade, officials neglected to respond to environmental reports that the drinking water in the prison had dangerous levels of lead, copper and radium. The problem of dangerously contaminated water also affected 1,700 inmates of the Dodge Correctional Institution- also located in Waupun.
